OPSEC - Navy Operations Security

Always keep Navy Operations Security in mind. In the Navy, it's essential to remember that "loose lips sink ships." OPSEC is everyone's responsibility.

DON'T post critical information including future destinations or ports of call; future operations, exercises or missions; deployment or homecoming dates.

DO be smart, use your head, always think OPSEC when using texts, email, phone, and social media, and watch this video: "Importance of Navy OPSEC."

Please note! Changes to this guide happened in October 2017. Tickets are now issued for all guests, and all guests must have a ticket to enter base. A separate parking pass is no longer needed to drive on to base for parking.

Hello everyone and welcome to the Navy!!! This Group was started for the loved one of DEPPERS leaving in the month of July(although everyone is welcome).......What year you say? Well ......any year!

If you have July ship out issues/questions etc., need specific information, (or have some to share) or just want to talk to someone that is where you are, with a Recruit leaving for and arriving in BC in July, ...then this is the place to be. :-)

Remember, don't "miss 'em while you're with them!" :) Make the most of every precious moment together before they leave. This will be a big transition for both of you! We'll be here for you every step of the way...

Things to do in the last month before your future sailor leaves

Once your recruit has arrived at RTC, the next stop here is to join the group Boot Camp for Moms (and loved ones) Hangout and ask questions in this group until your form letter arrives.

***New news just out today (9/25/19) from the US Navy Recruit Training Command FaceBook page:

Attention families and friends of RTC: Previously, upon arrival to boot camp, recruits would box up their civilian belongings and ship it to their choice of destination. Our new procedure now has those boxes being stored locally and will be returned to the recruits the day before graduation. The new procedure went into effect this week beginning with Div. 409 in Training Group 52.

Approx two to three weeks after your recruit arrives you will receive the "Form Letter". The form letter will include their Ship# , DIV #, their mailing address, PIR date, and the Security Access Form. The Security Access form needs to be completed and sent back to your recruit ASAP. Keep this letter in a safe place, it has the information you will need.

The date that is on the form letter is the official date for your Recruit's Training Groups PIR (graduation), Things can always change for an individual Recruit (due to illness, injury, failure to pass a final test etc.)! So, we always recommend that you plan, if possible, to purchase Refundable or Exchangeable plane tickets.

After you have received the form letter, join the group for your recruits PIR. There you can ask questions about PIR, training, hotels etc.Those groups will be posted in the Boot Camp for Mom's group.

**It is very important that your future Sailor be physically fit prior to shipping to the RTC (these are new standards beginning 1/1/2018) and that he be able to pass an initial run test. See Navy Fitness Standards"The initial run standard is evaluated on the 1.5 mile run of the first Physical Fitness Assessment (PFA) at boot camp. The initial run standard for male recruits will be 16 minutes 10 seconds and 18 minutes 37 seconds for female recruits."

You can either drop them at the recruiters office or in some cases the recruiter might pick them up from home. With all the COVID going on they might not let you go to MEPS. The recruiter should be able to tell your son how things are being handled in your area. Good luck to your son. Be sure to check in on the boot camp page for more up to date info!

Comment by trublumom on July 11, 2020 at 2:30pm: Got the call yesterday that my son will leave July 20. Wow!!!! Do you know how “drop off” works? Do I just drop him off at recruiting center or can I take him directly to MEPS (3 hours from our town)?

There's a good chance you might not be able to go to MEPS. And they still haven't started back up with live PIR's either. Everything is up in the air....the BC page will give you your best info. Jump in over there and ask any questions you might have. They are pretty good at responding in a timely manner.

Also, is your son ready to go? Hopefully he's memorized all his stuff he needs to know and has the physical part down too. The running is real important! See my post below regarding new fitness standards.

Comment by HoneyLemonTea on July 29, 2019 at 9:44am: Angela, I know what you mean I would text my daughter throughout the day usually and it is this little thing that I miss during my work day, my nephew has received a few more texts than usual lately.

Vida, it has been about 4 years since my stepson had his birthday at RTC but he asked me not to send anything with Happy Birthday on the outside. I am sure he heard rumors about extra IT is something for your birthday but he did not have anyone realize it was his birthday and I don’t remember him talking about anyone that had a birthday be recognized at RTC.

Comment by Angela on July 28, 2019 at 9:12am: My son shipped out on the 16th. Still no form letter. He did call after he arrived and I got his box of stuff. Really miss him. It's weird not being able to text him. I hope we receive his form letter soon.

Comment by Toti75 on July 28, 2019 at 9:10am: My sweet Son Left on 1 july. He Call we talk for a hour....but haven't received FORM LETTER. He wrote letters but nothing...Make me very Sad. I miss him deeply. He is so giving so loving never give us any trouble always helping at home...great student we couldn't understand at the beginning why joined the military....But God showed us he LOVE to served others ..When everyday Friends call and keep asking for him telling us stories about he always listen and make then feel better. He is a blessing.
So you know ...is normal still waiting for the Formal Letter?

Comment by HoneyLemonTea on July 27, 2019 at 9:58pm: My baby of four left for RTC on the 17. I am currently traveling for work. At least the 11 hours days keeps me busy. But i miss texting her throughout the day. Today is the first day i have not been working a ton, i believe i had 81 hours on my time sheet too bad i am paid a salary, and i don't think sitting still is doing me any good. I am restless and pretty sure my husband will grow tried of me asking if we received the form letter yet or talking about the form letter if we do not receive it soon and it is only the second day i have talked about it. Going to keep myself busy making a questionnaire to send in the first letter, just to do something.

Looks like I'm going to keep my phone attached to my hip so I dont miss the next one. My hubby and I got our plane tickets for Chicago and I cant wait to see him!

She and others who arrived around the same time waited for more recruits to arrive; enough to fill a division, 945. THEN they started training and such. Haven't heard what she did for that week, but she's "casted off and is underway" with the training now. Her new grad date then, due to the delay is 13SEP. Can't wait! What an Adventure!
