Hello everyone and welcome to the Navy!!! This Group was started for the loved one of DEPPERS leaving in the month of July(although everyone is welcome).......What year you say? Well ......any year!

If you have July ship out issues/questions etc., need specific information, (or have some to share) or just want to talk to someone that is where you are, with a Recruit leaving for and arriving in BC in July, ...then this is the place to be. :-)

Remember, don't "miss 'em while you're with them!" :) Make the most of every precious moment together before they leave. This will be a big transition for both of you! We'll be here for you every step of the way...
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Things to do in the last month before your future sailor leaves

(Click on the link)

Once your recruit has arrived at RTC, the next stop here is to join the group Boot Camp for Moms (and loved ones)  Hangout and ask questions in this group until your form letter arrives.

***New news just out today (9/25/19) from the US Navy Recruit Training Command FaceBook page:
Attention families and friends of RTC: Previously, upon arrival to boot camp, recruits would box up their civilian belongings and ship it to their choice of destination. Our new procedure now has those boxes being stored locally and will be returned to the recruits the day before graduation. The new procedure went into effect this week beginning with Div. 409 in Training Group 52.

Approx two to three weeks after your recruit arrives you will receive the "Form Letter". The form letter will include their Ship# , DIV #, their mailing address, PIR date, and the Security Access Form. The Security Access form needs to be completed and sent back to your recruit ASAP. Keep this letter in a safe place, it has the information you will need.

The date that is on the form letter is the official date for your Recruit's Training Groups PIR (graduation), Things can always change for an individual Recruit (due to illness, injury, failure to pass a final test etc.)! So, we always recommend that you plan, if possible, to purchase Refundable or Exchangeable plane tickets.

After you have received the form letter, join the group for your recruits PIR. There you can ask questions about PIR, training, hotels etc. Those groups will be posted in the Boot Camp for Mom's group.

Thanks for joining us. We hope you will realize you are not alone, and will soon make new friends, plus feel supported and encouraged! :)

**It is very important that your future Sailor be physically fit prior to shipping to the RTC (these are new standards beginning 1/1/2018) and that he be able to pass an initial run test. See Navy Fitness Standards"The initial run standard is evaluated on the 1.5 mile run of the first Physical Fitness Assessment (PFA) at boot camp. The initial run standard for male recruits will be 16 minutes 10 seconds and 18 minutes 37 seconds for female recruits."

Dozy...I totally understand what you are going through. I remember being on information overload when my son first swore into DEP last June.  Yes...it's been that long.  He is still in high school and will be graduating two weeks before he leaves for BC.

As far as the recruiter goes, you should be able to talk with him any time you have questions.  My son's recruiter tells me to give him a call any time.  You will be dropping your son off at the recruiter's office the day BEFORE he leaves for BC. The recruiter will do a "pee test" just before they leave. He will travel with the recruiter to MEPS and will stay in a hotel overnight.  You can go wherever he is leaving from and spend the evening with him before he ships out, but you will need to have him back at the hotel by a certain time.

You will get a letter from your son about 2 weeks after he is in BC that will have his PIR information.  You can kind of calculate when you think it will be if you count about 8-9 Fridays from the day your son leaves for BC.

What rating(job) is your son going into?  They go to different places based on what they are training to be.  Most likely his recruiter already can tell you that information but it is also here on N4M.  I will try to find the link for you and get you a few other helpful ones that will probably answer most of your questions.

I had my son sign up for NFCU.  He will have to call them to open the account if he is doing it before he leaves.  Otherwise, they will help him open the account when they first get to BC.  I figured it would be easier to have it all set up for him before he left so he could learn about having an account etc.

Don't hesitate to ask any questions at all.  I will look up the most useful links for you to read and post them here.  Hang in there and don't stress.  We are all in this together and we will make it just like so many other Moms have before us.

Thank you all for your knowledge.  I have so many unanswered questions. Do we meet with the recruiter prior to his leaving?  When do we know when his PIR is?  When do they find out where they are going after A school?  What about the Navy Credit Union?  Yikes..everyday seems like more questions are popping into my head..

one more thing about boot camp,  if they pass the physical test prior to boot camp they get an  E2 pay at entrance to boot camp.

Also, they won't be getting a paycheck for the first month.  All their stuff they need they have to buy which is pretty much their entire pay

This is with regards to cells & cars.

with Verizon I just had to call to tell them son was in Navy.  they suspended service until I notified them otherwise.  There was no proof needed. There was no activation/suspension fees involved.  Nice surprise for us!

With the car, a lot of companies let you delay payments. I am unsure of stipulations (i.e.active duty/boot camp/A school) But it never hurts to ask for the unknown/lessor known options.

The same goes for car insurance- if your future sailor isn't living with you (boot camp/ A or C school), they don't have to be rated under your policy. In other words, they are listed on your policy as a provisional driver but they can't be calculated in the premium cost... meaning there is a reduction in your monthly bill!  So be sure to call all your companies.

Don't forget health insurance policies either, they are no longer eligible under your dental/health policies.

Also, don't get expensive glasses or dental work done prior to their leaving for boot camp.  They are issued standard boot camp glasses, not allowed to wear contacts & they provide all necessary dental work.

Last note, get ready for the weirdest two months of your life.

I personally hated all the unknowns...felt like I was searching for any hint that he was okay. This site helped to a certain degree.,You'll find yourself  hanging on to the phone for the just in case impromptu phone call (which was flippin awesome) to the much longed for, cherished hand written letter that will be read & reread just so you can feel a connection to your child who, by the way, is now an adult.

Graduation is an incredible experience. I sure hope you can be there to enjoy this wonderful moment.  Can't prepare you mentally for it cause it's different for everyone.  Bring binoculars, get a hotel earlier than later & go to a Meet n' greet the weekend of graduation. A lot of the hotels offer them. Tell your kid to stay put after the ceremony because it will be easier for you to find them rather than visa versa.  How wonderful they all look (esp. your own) is a sight within itself.

my daughter just found out she's leaving July 28th...it's going to go so fast.

T-Mobile told us that we can move our son's phone to his own plan through their "bill payment" responsibility" plan (or something like that). I know we need to get a "General" Power of Attorney, but our son turns 18 four days after boot camp starts, so I'm not sure how we can have him sign it before he's 28. Has anyone else ran into that yet? We decided against buying our son a car, but if your "future sailor" won't be driving for awhile, there are a lot of options available through your insurance company for saving money; like "storage" coverage.

My niece just told me she wants to have a surprise going away party for my son before he leaves!  I'm so happy, he'll know how much his family supports him.

Dozy. AT&T told me they can put a hold on the account of the cell phone, but I need to bring in his orders.  I think when it gets closer I'll ask my son to ask his recruiter to help.

I am also making him study the 11 orders and the ranks.  A sleep deprived environment will make learning that much harder for him!

Dozy 39, your son can have his phone back when boot camp is over and he starts his A school.  Sorry I don't have any advice on what to do with his car.

With April upon us..I can't believe how fast time is flying.  July will be here in no time.  So I finally trying to get my son's, Jeff, organized as best I can prior to his leaving.  this site is get but sometimes to much information and I get lost. So please leave tips on what you felt needed to get done.  This week we're going to the bank to make sure that we are joint owners on his accounts as well as having a Heath Care Proxy and Power of Attorney put in place.  Not sure what to do about his cell phone and car?!
