My son is leaving from OKC Nov 5, 2014.

I thought I was okay with it but I am starting to get apprehensive.

The longest he has ever been gone is about a month.  When he was in school  he was only about 2 hours away and we could text all the time.  Now when he leave, we have no idea when we will get to see him again since we we will not get to attend his PIR (unless there is a miracle).  His A school is also at Great Lakes and he will be there almost a year.

After A school he can request a 10 day leave home( he needs to "work" at his local recruiting office! Forgot the name of the leave- can anyone help me on that? So you can see him sooner!

There is no local recruiting office.  The one he enlisted at is 2 hours away where he went to school.

How many actually get the 10 day leave if they request it.........

I mentioned this to my daughter she said she will try and remember it.

Most do get 10 days after graduating "A" School. Have your Sailor consider doing RAP duty with a recruiter while home and getting credit for 5 days of unchargeable Leave.  Be sure that the recruiter signs off and sends in the paperwork.

What is RAP duty, please?

Recruiter Aide. My son did this when he was a Naval Sea Cadet in place of attending a winter training.

RAP Duty: Recruiting Assistance Leave Program duty; by assisting a recruiter while on Leave between Apprentice Training or "A" School and the first duty station, the Sailor can earn 5 days of unchargeable leave after turning in the paperwork at the new command. (See http://www.public.navy.mil/bupers-npc/reference/milpersman/1000/100....)

The Page, What does ??? mean? (A Guide to Navy Abbreviations and Terminology), will help you with many of the new terms you will come across.

Thank you.

You are very welcome.

My daughter leaves the 5th from Oregon.......We won't be able to attend her PIR either, unless by some miracle (*like winning the lottery). This saddens me, but, there isn't much I can do about it. I will watch the live stream, and order a DVD of it....

We will be doing the same thing.

I have twin boys leaving Mississippi on November 5th.  They will both remain in Great Lakes for their A school.  They will be attending different schools so one will be there much longer than his brother.  I do plan to attend PIR.
