My son is leaving September 26th!  OMG!!  that is right around the corner!!!  Counting 8 weeks from then it seems he will graduate boot camp on Black Friday?? Does anyone know anything about how this will work being a holiday weekend????

Hi dawnl - my son left last year right around September 26th and PIRd over Thanksgiving week. The way they did it last year was that his PIR was held on Wednesday before Thanksgiving. Then we had the rest of Wednesday afternoon and evening until he had to report back to base and all of Thursday until he had to report back to base with him and he flew out early Friday morning for Pensacola. Of course since it's the Navy everything is always open for change - but that was how it went last year.

My son leaves from Maryland on September 26th as well.  I have been trying to figure out the same thing!  Traveling that time of year is difficult and I want to get tickets and be prepared, but I want to make sure before I purchase them.  It is frustrating because I am a planner and really want to know what to expect.  I guess we will all know for sure the first week of August.....Does anyone know if you are only allowed to have 4 people at graduation?

My son is leaving on Sept 25th, I am hoping that they graduate on Black Friday.  If you look at last year (2011), they did have a class graduate that day.  Hoping it is the same this year!!!

My son leaves September 24 - and I was wondering the same thing about the PIR and how they worked it over Thanksgiving week.

Thanks Jenn for your answer.

Great to know!! i am hoping that they do it over thanksgiving week! i work at a college so that is already time off for me so i wouldn't have to take time off to go!

Dawn -

My son ships out on September 25th from Boston (I think). Thanks to all for the info regarding the timing of PIR. Will have to start soon on making travel arrangements with it being the holiday weekend. Enjoy your summer with your sailor.

My son is leaving on Sept 27th. He signed up in Feb and time is flying fast. No one he goes to DEP with is leaving at the same time so anxiety is setting in for him. I look forward to graduation being around the holiday because there is nothing I will more thankful for than seeing my son graduate boot camp.

Hello Dawn, My son is leaving the same day (well the 25th to stay overnight and then ride the bus to pickup the other recruits who are coming from all over the country, we live in the Chicago Sub's). I'm a single mom and he's my only child, so I'm excited and devistated all at the same time, as I'm sure you are. I asked our recruiter about the Black Wednesday thing, he said that more than likely they will keep them in BC through the holiday and finish in week 9. However, it's possible that they will fast track and finish them a few days early. In otherwords, there are no answers. LOL, but if they do end early, they will only be given a few hours of leave for the Holiday, so really only the lucky boys who live close to GL will benefit from it. Thats what I was told.

My son is leaving on September 26 also!  Where is your son leaving from?  Actually he doesn't ship out until the 27th, but he's picked up on the 26th.

My son is leaving on the 27th from St. Louis.  I was also curious how the graduation would work with the Thanksgiving weekend.

hi my son is leaving 9/26 from ga. i am planning on being there for the final swearing in and send off so how does that work

My son leaves on the 26th too. Although we live in SC now, we were in Nh last year so he leaves for BC from MEPS in Maine. Anyone leaving from that area?
