My son will be graduating from GL on 1/22/10! Before he left for BC we had read somewhere that the A School training for MAA's was San Antonio then VA and then GA. It was spending something like 50 or 60 days at each place. After reading comments here it sounds like some go to San Antonio or some go to VA. Do they just have to go to one location for A School training before they get their first assignment? Any recent GL grads out there that know if he's more likely to go to Lackland or Virginia Beach?

I appreciate any comments or help anyone has to offer. Philip is really excited and looking forward to PIR and moving on in his training to become an MAA. It seems like a lot of the MA's are being sent to Kuwait...Are a lot of you finding that to be the case? Any information you can share would be great.

Thanks,
Cathy

My son went from Great Lakes to San Antonio. He has graduated from A school (12/17/09) and will be stationed in Bangor, WA. He told me that 8 out of 40 were heading to Bangor. A lot of guys are going to Bahrain (spelling?). Good luck to your son!
Hi GoldenEmily!

Thanks for your response. I noticed you are from Marietta, GA. I just got back from spending the weekend in Dallas, GA! My cousin's daughter got married to a navy guy that she met last year when her brother was in GL. The mom's knew each other from N4M and never imagined their kids would meet at PIR and end up married a year later. LOL Anyone Donna, my cousin, actually grew up in Marietta and we used to go visit them a lot. My Uncle was retired Air Force and worked for Lockheed. Good Luck to your son! I'm just ready for PIR! Really missing Philip. We've only had 1 real phone call and they were not even allowed to call us on Thanksgiving Day. I'm hoping but not getting my hopes up that he will get to call on Christmas Day.

Thanks again!
Cathy
My son also went to Great Lakes, gave Seals a shot(made it to the 2nd day of Hell week and blew out his knee) and then headed to San Antonio. He also graduated 12/17/09 and is now in Bahrain supposedly for 2 years. Good luck! The one thing to remember is that there are no definite answers about anything...the best plan is not having a plan. :)
Stephen went from Great Lakes to San Antonio and then to Travis AFB in California. There was almost 40 sailors that graduated with him. Alot went to King's Bay Georgia, one went to Guam, 2 went to Travis, some went to Virginia. None went directly to the middle east. They need more training first. Merry Christmas everyone
My son went from GL to SA for A school. It was on his contract that he would go to school in SA. He also had about 40 graduate with him. He and 8 others went to Greece, some went to Bahrain, a couple went to Japan and the rest stayed in the states. It is just wherever they are needed at the time. Good luck to you and your son. PIR is the greatest. Have a great time there.
This information has been super helpful! My hubby just graduated from bootcamp Wednesday! He is heading to SA for A school this week! I can't wait to receive orders and finally figure out where we'll be stationed :)
HaTina...our son was not Grad n' Go and we did get to spend the entire weekend with him. Of course he did have to be back on base each night at a certain time but we could pick him up at 7:00 a.m. each morning. We were lucky because Philip did not have "watch" until Sunday at 7:00 p.m. PIR was wonderful and the weekend was great. However, don't be surprised if your son doesn't act like himself even while out with you. My son acted as my husband said "skittish" even they he was ecstatic to see us. However, when he called me from O'Hare to tell me he was on his way to San Antonio he sounded more like himself. Once he got to SA he really did sound like himself! He is now counting down days to Mar 19th and graduation from "A" School to come home and visit everyone but he does enjoy SA. He says it's like being in college, not at all like BC!
I love all this information. My son is going to BC in July and then is scheduled to so to SA for A school. I'm just so happy I get to read and get all this information before he goes.
My daughter is going to BC in July and is also scheduled to go to SA for A school. What a journey!
Yes, I think my son called a total of 3 times and that includes his "I'm a Sailor" call that they make the week of PIR. My son shipped to GL on 11/18 so he was there for all the Holidays and he only got to call us Christmas Eve. We didn't even get a call Thanksgiving. I do promise that once they hit "A" School all of that changes!!!! Once they get their cell phones and laptops they will have the opportunity to have regular contact with you. Hang in there and just look beyond PIR. It will get better for both of you!!
My son spent 3 yrs at Kings Bay and loved it there, great place to visit except for the humidity! Now he's in Bahrain until June then they are off to Italy for three more yrs

Welcome, I would like to invite you to join the group, San Antonio MA's (clickable link), as well.
