My daughter leaves for boot in Dec.  We're going to Maryland next spring to visit while she's in a school.  Could anyone recommend a place to stay and/or things to do while we are there?

That is very cool.  I've been telling my son in boot camp stuff I read here to keep him focused.  He is going to really love MC.

@stephsmom: How does Steph like her job? How does she like ship life and Japan? Did Steph complete college as a graphic designer?   Recently heard from my daughter, Elizabeth, who  was out to sea, filming  'man-overboard practices'. She emailed to say she had on her life jacket, and was surrounded by 3 able-bodied seaman to be sure she could photograph the M-OB practices safely, without becoming the 'man overboard'. On Facebook, you can 'like' the US Navy  and keep up with the many jobs and actions they take.  I've been following the Hurricane info in East Coast. The Navy sent many ships to sea before it hit the coastline. Any pictures, reports, slideshows, articles are performed by the MC specialists. What a great job!

@Rachel's mom:  Is Rachel and her family safe? evacuated? Hope all is well. I've been following this closely. I see Maryland has declared a state of emergency.  Scary for the A schoolers.

Cool. Thanks people for the tips. I haven't heard of any MC's that don't like their job so far so that is encouraging. It will be exciting to see where she goes with this. Literally.

BonnieRN- My son Ben graduated as an MC in May and is now on the USS Abraham Lincoln. The ship does a program called "The Boat Show" on Facebook when they are out on deployments. They just did one when they were in Los Angeles for Navy Week. She should go on it and see what it's all about!!! My son Ben is the one reporting from the Santa Monica Pier.

to get a very general idea of a type of MC job: TV news anchor as well as out in the field as a interviewer / videographer: go to http://afneurope.net  (afn is American Forces News)  There are many positions out there once A school is completed.   My advice is flexibility.   Good Luck. Keep in touch with us!

And they are very nice in A school. They want your dtr to succeed!!

To BonnieRN from bonnie:  There isn't a 'graphic design department' but whatever skills are needed your sailor-girl will be called upon to do them.  Having some different set of  skills than the usual, and offering/volunteering  to do something above and beyond what is expected, gets high marks. The Navy advancement in rank is expected and encouraged.

Tell your dtr that she will be fine in the group of other military branches in A school. It's joint services training.  Coast Guard is also among the branches she will be studying with. She's nervous about so many new things she's facing and worried that she'll get it all wrong. She'll be fine. It's all so new and unknown! My dtr is in heaven with her MC job. She received an award for creating the Facebook page for her MC  position in Italy.

An then, sometimes the work  can be boring, slow and mundane just like any job!!   Sometimes, the people one works with are bothersome!! Just like any other job!!  I will be right back. I'm going to get the website for an MC job you can view so you can get a sense of one kind of work that happens. Be back.

My dtr has been at Ft Meade for just about a week and I heard from her for the first time today. Her classes start Monday and says they will be mixed army, navy, marines and air force..at least at first. She was a little anxious in that they were having to learn how to recognize rank in all the other branches as well as navy so that she would know when to salute etc.  She sounds very excited and is ready to roll.  Says the people there are "ridiculously nice".    My kid was in DEP for a year waiting for an MC spot !  Good luck futureMC !

Kerry...when does your son graduate ?

bonnie... do you know if they incorporate graphic design in MC school ?

Comment by Kerry on August 26, 2011 at 10:42am

Sounds like good advice.  My son is at Great Lakes and will be going to Fort Meade for mass communication school.
