Hi,

My name is Kristin...my oldest son Michael is leaving June 24th 2013, a week after high school graduation for RTC. After BC, he'll be headed to A School  for MN training....just wanted to know what it's been like for some of you MN moms? Are your sons happy with their chosen field? Rewarding? Travel? Bonuses? We are new to this and new to the site. It's hard to trust what the RO say...lol. Thanks so much for any info or advice any of you may have for us :)

Our son is in Bahrain as a junior officer on a rotating minesweeper Crew. He very much enjoys the small community and is happy with his chosen field. He states that they are very busy which helps the time go by quickly. A minesweeper has less than 100 personnel, and they get close with their shipmates as well as with other minemen as they are ported in an area away from the main Naval base in Bahrain. My impression is that they get to build many strong relationships.

The minesweeper Crews rotate from their home port (our son's home port is San Diego) and their deployment destination. Rotations can be 8 months or perhaps a year...based on activity.

While our son likes the food inboard, be has lost a lot of weight from limited portions, working out a lot, and then lark in general burns calories.

I believe most of the minesweepers are in Bahrain or Japan. The deployments are in far off places which for me is difficult. He has been able to call and email. Deployments can get extended.

For down time...our son mentioned that he enjoys working out on base, playing competitive soccer, pick up basketball, and Madden football video game.

As a home port, San Diego is awesome, and our son has a small cottage that he maintains even while deployed. The area that he likes in San Diego is up by Balboa Park.

Good luck, and please Let me know if you have any more questions. I am sorry that I cannot address your question on bonuses. Merry Christmas!

Thank you SO much for this. It's a great glimpse into what we should expect!

My daughter re-enlisted a year ago. As she puts it, her signing bonus was a job for six more years. So, no $$$.

HoustonTXMom: thank you for the information about the minesweeper crews. My son's PIR was 12-21-12, he is at GL A school for Sonar & Robotics. He should finish his classes there by late Feb and may have a few days leave before he is to report to SD for the remainder of his MN training. As for the downtime you describe it sounds like heaven for a 19 y.o. seaman. I live in Dallas, TX and am also a member of Texas moms, are you?

Minemanmom530: if you haven't already you should join the BC and the DEP groups. The BC group offers great info for those 8 weeks your son will be at BC. If you are able to attend PIR (it was an amazing ceremony!!!) make plans to go to Sarge's Meet & Greet at the Sundance Saloon in Waukegan, IL. Sarge also runs a Taxi service, so if you fly into Chicago hire Sarge to transport you to your hotel and back to the airport. He also takes care of the seaman on liberty and leave from GL.

Thanks so much for this info! We are down to 27 days until our son leaves for BC.....we are nervous...sad but so excited for him! And we are definitely planning to attend PIR....wouldn't miss it for the world. Thanks again for all the info and we apologize for not replying sooner! Happy Memorial Day to you and your family :)
Hello my name is Michelle , my son leaves for RTC on Wednesday and his rating is MN. I find so little online about Minemen and I was wondering if someone can let me know if he has a good chance of getting his home base as San Diego after A school? I know he will end up overseas, but just curious if there are orders for San Diego that he can choose from during A school
