The Shadowhawks are an Electronic Attack Squadron & are deployed on the Bush aircraft carrier in the Gulf.

There are 216 sailors assigned to the Shadowhawks -- 190 men and 26 women.  They received pillowcases when they arrived on the ship, so no need to worry about pillowcases for this adoption.

I received this sweet message from our POC:  “…it is so hot out here.  But it seems wrong to ask for anything.  Whatever you do will be received well by our Sailors.  And, thank you for what you are doing, not just for us, but for every Sailor life you are touching.”  He went on to say that our ideas for them would be far better than anything he could think of & he didn’t want to ask others for input as he wants this to be a huge & total surprise.

So, Moms we have our work cut out for us …  One thing I thought we should keep in mind is that they will be receiving their boxes right around  9/11 – the reason they are deployed & still fighting this war on terror that the other side started 10 years ago.  Let’s make certain that our sailors know:

                         “We Will Never Forget.”

Many will have sad memories of that day – NYC, DC & PA, let’s do our best to put a positive spin on things. I was thinking for a theme - “Picnic in Central Park”.  Central Park is a GREAT place for a picnic!

And, August is ‘National Picnic Month.’  In Central Park, people read, play ball, throw Frisbees, children blow bubbles & draw pictures with sidewalk chalk. There are artists painting & drawing, people writing or talking.  Of course, we can’t do anything about walking a dog (& pooper-scooping), but people jog, do yoga & catch some rays while playing in the fountains.  And, of course, eat!!!  (So we need food/snack items.)

Perhaps items can be red, white & blue to acknowledge American endurance on the 10th Anniversary of 9/11.

Shipping will be August 22 – 27th.

These are just my thoughts.  So, let the discussions begin … !!!!

Girly stuff!  I have some feminine products to send too, plus bottles of nail polish and make up.  I know a PO who was deployed with my son who I will ask about what is permissible for them to use.

I am walking away from the computer in a few minutes!  I have to share this though.  I just got a note from a Navy mom here who is also a Navy vet, as is her husband.  Here's what she wrote:

I'm in for the packing party! I'll bring some beauty supplies for the girls.. I remember getting a box with different shampoos and etc when I was out to sea. It was like Christmas!!

Makes all of this worth it, doesn't it?

YES MA'am it does make it all worth it -----------------I LOVE THIS PLACE !!   Staying home tomorrow cough cough and going shopping for red white and blue stuff for our shawdowhawks
Hope your cough improves with some "retail therapy"!!
yes it does thanks for sharing...I got my girl stuff together....but being a momma of men ...I'm gonna have to bring guys stuff too....lol
I just got a message that one of my long ago students has 15 victoria secret pink gift sets in stock that she's going to donate! I don't know what's in them, but I'd be excited to get one! And she's going to bring her Daisy scouts to make cards and decorate pillow cases.
WOOHOO............they are going to be rocking ...VS on the inside and Reebok on the out....
Well, I have been busy as a detective looking for codes and I guess I never hit follow about this discussion. I have caught up and I take it that we need to come up with water bottles? I am going to Oklahoma City today and I will see what I can find. I did pick up 4 of those little water mist fans. They have a clip on them and are pocket sized. I will order the snacks that I am sending next week so if there are any requests of what I can get please let me know. Oh, and I clicked the follow button so I don't have to read 12 pages of comments.
I never noticed that little 'follow' button!!  Guess I better get some stronger glasses!
I've got some Girl Scout Juniors and Legion Auxiliary Juniors coming to help decorate cards and pillow cases next Sunday.  Probably less than 10, but they are excited!

Woo Hoo....I got the stuff all packed.....

My friends are generous--you won't believe the list I was sent of all the girly stuff they are bringing!  Fun stuff, snacks, cosmetic samples and freebees.  Those Shawdowhawkettes are gonna think it's Christmas before we get done with them!
