Our adoption this month is the USS Gonzalez a guided missile destroyer.  The ship is named for Sgt. Alfredo Cantu Gonzalez a Medal of Honor recipient in the Vietnam War.  The Gonzalez is a small ship with a crew of 270 ( 180 males and 90 females ).

My POC has informed me that because of their mission they will not see many port visits.  Supplies are only replenished once a month and the ship store is very tiny.  Also because of the way in which they receive shipments boxes may take a beating.  so we need to use plenty of tape and bag items that could be damaged if they were to get wet.

The ship's chaplain has requested greeting cards that the sailors can send home to Moms, Dads, Wives and kids.  They really need Birthday cards for kids of all ages.  Cards of all sorts are helpful.  In addition the Chaplain has also asked for childrens books.  The ship runs a program called United through Reading that allows sailors to record videos of them reading books to be sent home.  Childrens books for all ages are needed.

Their wish list consist of the following

dried fruit

granola bars

energy bars

water flavor packs

coffee!!!!!!!!!!

any and all snacks

candy and gum

chips of all kinds

beef jerky

microwavable meals/soups/mac&cheese/popcorn

cookies/brownies

magazines/puzzle books

any toilertries

Pillow cases are ok

My POC would like to have Mardi Gras decorations!!!

So come on Navy Moms lets give them a MARDI GRAS PARTY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'm thinking mask and beads and whatever our Navy Moms minds can come up with!!!!!!

We will be shipping the week of the 21st

I can do at least one box.  Are we doing generic boxes or should we mark for female or male?

We are doing generic because I don't think I will have enough boxes for each person.  We are giving them a Mardi Gras party so all kinds of snacks would be great.  I have about a box and a half of decorations I am sending and there are some other sending decorations as well.  I also have several boxes of snacks and drink mix as well.

Posting this here and on the Jan. adoption page.  Is anyone sending their books early by "media mail?"  It has saved me in the past, but it does take longer.  Just wondering if I should pack up my books in a plain box and ship them separately from my other goodies.  Thanks :)

**********Ladies there maybe a problem with the FPO/AE that my POC give me, it looks like there may have been a typo.  Please don't address anything until I can confirm the right one.   As soon as I have an answer from my POC and if a change is needed I will change it in MAS, so please check before sending.*******************

Sorry for the mix up

My pillowcases are all boxed...I have 4 other boxes going that contain mostly snacks, but also mardi gras beads and blank cards for the sailors to send to loved ones!  They will go out Monday or Tuesday

We ran out of boxes for the December Adoptee and have snacks leftover.  Will go through what I have and do up a couple of boxes.  Will post later what I plan to send.  Will get out over the weekend and see about some books, greeting cards and Mardi Gras items.

Don't you just love that Dollar Store!

Yes I love love love the doller store.  Thanks ladies for all you are doing.  Make sure to check the address again before shipping I am going in to make a change with the APO

I have a box of PCs and I can put together a box of Hallmark recordable story books if you would like them.  Let me know and I will get them ready to ship.

NYPD Mom  that sounds great.  I have 15 boxes ready to go.  Oh, and I found DVD movies at the dollar store, not new releases but, some pretty good ones only a year or two old.

Hi

I have some micro meals, 2 large crossword puzzle books and 11 children's book for the United Through Reading program.

Went to a local children's consignment shop.  They are all in excellent condition and most of them were only $.95.

Haven't hit the Dollar Store yet!

Thanks Denise, I hadn't thought about checking out second hand store for books, I will have to keep that in mind for the future.

This is the week to ship and the address has been corrected, I have 15 boxes going, please let me know when you have shipped and how many boxes, since it is a small ship and not a lot of room I want to let my POC know approx how many boxes are coming so they can make room.

Thank you ladies for all that you do.
