June marks the official beginning of summer so let’s have a

YELLOW AND BLUE BARBECUE

Our June adoption is for a “crazy crew” of ABHs aboard the aircraft carrier USS George Washington CVN73.

The ABHs (Aviation Boatswain’s Mate – Handling) are the yellow shirts and blue shirts on the flight deck of an aircraft carrier.

They launch and recover aircraft and work extremely long hours covering day and night flights.  Things get pretty hot working around “the birds” and this crew needs a bit of summertime fun to lift their spirits!  Bulk boxes filled with the ingredients for a fun summer picnic or barbecue would be great for this group!

Based in Yokosuka, Japan, they are currently on patrol.  The ABH crew consisting of 165 males and 22 females.

They are requesting:

Food

beef jerkey, slim jims

energy/protein bars, breakfast bars, Pop Tarts, mini boxes of cereal, granola bars

dried fruit, canned fruit (easy open tops)

canned soup, cup of soup, tuna (in pouch or pop top can)

crackers, rice krispy treats, sunflower seeds, chips, pretzels, bean dip, cheese dip

cookies (any kind would be great) Jolly Ranchers, Smarties, Sweet Tarts, hard candy, gum

seasoning salt, hot sauce

Gatorade type mix for water bottles as well as the water bottles with straps

First Aid / Personal Care

aloe vera burn gel, lip balm, moisturizing/cleansing eye drops, saline nasal spray, throat drops

vaseline blister care, flexible & cloth bandages, surgical masks, bug repellent, pocket tissues

no-water aspirins, vitamins, cotton swabs, nail clippers, eye glass wipes, Avon Skin So Soft

"hoo-ahh" brand unscented pre-moistened field towels, waterless antibacterial soap, sunscreen

strong flashlight & batteries, air freshener, tablet laundry detergent, perfume, cologne

brushes, combs, foot powder, disposable razors, non aerosol shaving cream, deodorant

Fashion

cooling neck bands, good quality sunglasses, bandanas, black boot socks, padded insoles

Fun

deck of cards, DVDs, Nerf balls, and a big YES to pillowcases.

I know that their list is long but these sailors really take a beating up there on the flight deck so let's send them some fun with a

YELLOW AND BLUE BARBECUE

Please mail packages between June 23rd and June 26th.  Thank you!

Really great job Laura!!!

I sent off 3 boxes with 65 of the "male" pillowcases.  Wish I could have done more to help.

You did do more.  You packed the boxes with Navy mom love!

I mailed 3 food boxes and 25 pillowcases. I added a couple containers of Lysol wipes and some baseball team M&Ms to fill the pillowcase box up. Forgot to put a note in that box :(

I wondered the same thing Mary Jo!?!!  Hey Laura... will you check and see if one of the ABH's 'went for a swim' last week??  That's right ladies someone working on the flight deck of the GW was blown overboard by a jet blast.  Can you imagine the panic of that young sailor as they fell from the flight deck to the water??  The wind was blowing and there were swells of over eight feet in rough seas.

Good news is that sailor was rescued and back on board in under 15 minutes!!  By who???  Well by none other than Mary Jo's son and his squadron mates!!  Bravo Zulu to HS-14 Chargers!  So awesome to see all those training hours put to work and such a wonderful outcome!!

Oh dear.  It was a blustery day for them.  So glad they were found quickly and safe!

hey Mary Jo...  tell the story!!  tell the story!!

I will check with our point of contact sailor.  It usually takes her some time to answer e-mails but I will ask again.  So glad that the sailor wasn't swimming for too long.

Laura, Great job as Mom of the Month!! Thank you very much!!

I had fun.  Thank you for all of your help Pat.

And thank you to everyone who helped make this adoption a success!

Here is the e-mail from Kathrine, our contact sailor.

No he wasn't from our crew, but we do know him, he's doing well but I haven't seen him in awhile.

The packages came in two days ago which was perfect timing, right on the Fourth of July.

It was great.  It lifted our spirits and made us all happy.

              Thank You so much!!!

Thank you all very much for your participation in the June "Yellow and Blue" adoption.  You all made a world of difference to those sailors!

On to July's adoption!
