Moms/Dads/Families with Nukes in Ballston Spa, NY

Moms/Dads/Families with Nukes in Ballston Spa, NY

Wanted to start a group for moms, dads, and other family members that have Nukes currently attending Prototype in Ballston Spa, NY.

Members: 169

Thought I would start a group for the families of sailors stationed in NY for Prototype. It will be nice to chat about what is going on with our sailors whether it is good or bad so that we can support each other. I have connected with many people on this site but it is always nice to meet others that are going through the same things together. Also if you have had a sailor in NY for an extended amount of time then you can help the new ones just coming in on what to expect.

My son is on track to graduate Prototype on July 12, which is one week before the horse races start. Has anyone been in Ballston Spa this time of year? We are planning on attending his graduation but I'm wondering if all the campgrounds and hotels will already be filled up the week beforehand.

I'm very happy that I heard from my son this morning.  Last night was his first day of shift work and he had just gotten in.  He sounded pretty tired, but overall really good.

People who "go sad" are sent home from the Navy. It was like that before the budget cuts issue too.

Prototype hours are weird like that so they can see how the sailors function on too little sleep. The work hours on an attack sub will be even much longer than they were during prototype. By a lot. Some people seem fine and book smart and good test takers as long as they got a good night's sleep the night before. Once you get that same person all sleep deprived and cranky however, some of them get forgetful or start to lose their sense of judgement, not a safe person to have around a nuclear reactor. At that point it no longer matters how much knowledge they learned in Power School or how well they remembered it when they were well rested.

Jo, Penny, & MomB I had no idea that Prototype would be so intense.

My son made it home this weekend   and I think he has mixed feelings about being out of the Navy   He told me last night that of the 5 nukes in his house  only one made it all the way through the pipeline and will graduate in March   now that is some stats the Nuke Navy does not tell you about

So remember to talk to and support your nukes they need it, I did not realize how hard that program was  I feel I let him down some times by not being there but tears over spilled milk does no good

And if you think Prototype is worse than the other two, try being an instructor there.  It is a two year assignment where they chose the best of the best and THEN make them stay on a 7-day rotation, along with their student's schedules, for a full two years.  Now talk about that messing with your schedule!!!

Thanks for responding Jo.  We are from Maine, so New York is quite a bit closer than Charleston, SC.  I hope we get to see him more often.  Will your son be graduating soon?

Hi Alison,

My sons an EM in Ballston Spa and he's been up there since the beginning of October.   Hope everything goes well for him.  My son said that part of NY state is very pretty.
