Moms/Dads/Families with Nukes in Ballston Spa, NY

Wanted to start a group for moms, dads, and other family members that have Nukes currently attending Prototype in Ballston Spa, NY.

Members: 169
Latest Activity: Jun 19

Thought I would start a group for the families of sailors stationed in NY for Prototype. It will be nice to chat about what is going on with our sailors whether it is good or bad so that we can support each other. I have connected with many people on this site but it is always nice to meet others that are going through the same things together. Also if you have had a sailor in NY for an extended amount of time then you can help the new ones just coming in on what to expect.

Hi Mom B sorry to hear about your son getting dropped from the nuclear program.  Now he is going to be assigned to another rating more than likely where he will do fine.

Groton is a really big command it is the main submarine command in the U.S. as well as having a training command with various schools there, and also actual submarine squadrons with attack subs.   Is your son a sub volunteer?  If so he will be sent to BESS first, which is the basic enlisted submarine school so he would probably be sent to that first to train on submarines in general.  They have some of the A schools there too.  If he is being re-rated from nuke he will probably go to another A school either at Groton or elsewhere.  Then after A school he will be sent to his permanent command which might also be Groton, or some other Navy base.

The Groton submarine base is a bit more than a 3 hour drive from Ballston Spa it is easy to drive there in 1/2 a day.  So he will load his gear into his automobile and drive it there then they will pay him for distance and also the weight of his belongings.  This process is similar to the move from Goose Creek to Ballston Spa.

You can be confident he will have somebody to report to there and will be assigned to a room in the barracks.  They will get him set up with a place to stay.  The food is very good there a lot better than the galley in Goose Creek or so I hear.  Even if he just drives up to the main gate and shows his orders they will tell him where to report.   Good luck.

Our sailor spent from April till present in Ballston Spa NY.  We visited in August, and enjoyed a historic trip to Boston.  So many sights to see there and also along the way.  The only drawback of the summer months is the horseracing season.

My son went through the navy assistance when he was in SC and he rented with 4 others a 5 bedroom house.  I think many of the leases have a military clause.

I added two comments to the discussion 'Apartments in Ballston Spa"

Best of luck to all the sailors. My son loved NY. He is finished with his commitment to the Navy in 2012. He came home in April. His Navy training helped him get a job within several months. He got married and has adjusted nicely to civilian life. Enjoy NY.  If your sailors get a chance, they should definitely see Manhattan. If you get a chance to visit your sailor - do so in the fall or spring. Nothing is more glorious than fall time along the Hudson Valley.  Be sure to take a tour of West Point (USMA), Boscobel House & Garden in Cold Springs,  and Woodstock (many art colonies in surrounding areas). If you have an ancestor who came from Germany in the 1700s and settled in the Hudson Valley, you'll find a gold mine in information at local churches.

Let me throw in here that with the military facility there, the landlords are usually pretty accommodating to these sailors who will only be there some months.  They know how things work militarily.

Great!  Thank you so much for your assistance.  I'll be watching for your email; I really appreciate it :-)  I have a feeling that my sailor and his current suitemate will find something on their own.  It will make me feel better passing along information from other moms.

Elkins ... I went back and read my posting and it could come off as being a but snide - for that I am very sorry. I truly meant to emphasize that they are given a lot of help to find housing. But like the one mom that was given the sign on and password, how wonderful. My son foun his first place right on Craig's list and was happy with it. It wasn't on the approved list but worked out very well.

Hi elkinsd, I went onto realtor.com and looked for places to rent and then emailed listings to my son in the range they wanted to spend. They are in a 4 bedroom house with a one car garage, not furnished but we had furniture we had at the house we wanted to get rid of.

Hi elkinsd, Even though it is not your "responsibility" to find housing you can be helpful if your son accepts your help.  My son signed up for a site with approved housing (I posted it quite awhile back.) and then gave me his password so I could help him look.  He was very busy at the time and appreciated me weeding things out.  He had a group of guys he wanted to move in with.  Of course he did all the actual contacting.

Comment by elkinsd on January 2, 2013 at 1:55pm

Oh I know it isn't my responsibility, I just wanted to help if I could by asking here for recommendations or places not to rent from.  In other words ask for personal recommendations from other sailors.  He even told me not to worry about it that he would be fine ..... and I'm sure he will be. I just can't help wanting to help.....makes me feel needed :-)  He has a place in mind, but doesn't want to make a deposit until he gets to see it.
