Thought I would start a group for the families of sailors stationed in NY for Prototype. It will be nice to chat about what is going on with our sailors whether it is good or bad so that we can support each other. I have connected with many people on this site but it is always nice to meet others that are going through the same things together. Also if you have had a sailor in NY for an extended amount of time then you can help the new ones just coming in on what to expect.

elkinsd - it isn't your responsibility to find housing for him and his classmate. They have people from BS come down and talk to all of the sailors and give them lists of places they can rent from in the local area and help to get them signed up. If he missed that appointment ... there are still people on base in GC he can go to to get housing assistance.
Hello! My son leaves Goose Creek on Jan. 18th for Ballston Spa, NY to wait for his prototype class to start. I'm hoping I can help find housing for him and his classmate. They are looking for something fully furnished, any suggestions? Thanks!
Penny and Mom, My sailor texted me a couple days ago "I put you down for a guest" Don't know what kind of ceremony, but it seems someone posted photos of graduation during this past summer.
I have heard that there is; my son thinks it is either 8:00 or 9:00 on the 29th but that is about all he knows. I have also been told that parents are invited but so far nothing more. I think the guys get so busy just getting through Prototype that nobody has time to ask until it is almost too late. If I find out anything, I'll post it here if all of the rest of you will do the same.
Navy housing is the same no matter where you are. You give up your entire BAH to live there. In Charleston, we had a 3 bedroom renovated house on base. It was beautiful and I miss it everyday. BAH is lower there, though, so it was around $1180. I remember thinking that even though we loved our house, it still seemed expensive. The problem here is that everywhere out in town is just as expensive. We've had some pretty extreme maintenance issues here though, so I'll let you know how cooperative housing ends up being!
In other news, things seem to be getting more confusing the closer we get to graduation. My husband is technically still a student, but he has a different to-do list than students who are preparing to leave. It feels like he's in limbo and he never really know what's going on. His days have been significantly shorter though, and I know he appreciates the free time that he hasn't had in... well, to be honest, almost 2 years haha.
I hope those of you with sailors graduating this month have heard good news about boards and qualifying!
Sorry I'm a little late getting back to you!
Yes--base housing is available to all students and staff here. It's not on site in Ballston Spa, it's on the Naval Support Activity base in Saratoga Springs. NSA is just where all the navy buildings are (like fleet and family services, navy federal, the NEX, commissary) since the plant isn't navy owned. I'm not sure if it's a rule, but most single sailor do room with someone in order to split the BAH. When you live on base, they take all of their BAH, so rooming with someone splits the cost, and they're still able to save a few hundred bucks of their BAH. We're trying to move off base because we just don't feel that our 950 sqft, 2 bedroom apartment is worth our entire BAH of $1400 (which will go up to over $1500 when my husband reenlists after the first of the year... yikes! WAY too much for base housing!).
Is this group private? I know some of the wives groups that I belong to frown upon posting plant names associated with our sailors, but I guess here it wouldn't matter since our last names are hidden? I'll just tell you and the admin can delete my post if it's not allowed!
My husband works at MARF. He is already qualified and will graduate at the end of this month.
Penny, wait a minute. I think my son got base housing b/c he's married. I can't vouch for single sailors. Sure would be a nice perk, tho, wouldn't it?
Ladies, are you telling me that BS has base housing for those on Staff???
