Thought I would start a group for the families of sailors stationed in NY for Prototype. It will be nice to chat about what is going on with our sailors whether it is good or bad so that we can support each other. I have connected with many people on this site but it is always nice to meet others that are going through the same things together. Also if you have had a sailor in NY for an extended amount of time then you can help the new ones just coming in on what to expect.

My son finished prototype and is almost finished ELT. He said everyone gets the checkoffs they need but sometimes you are cutting it close. He said ELT checkoffs are just like prototype and that, since the reactors are down, some things have been pushed back, but that everyone will finish. Oh, and he just became a Daddy yesterday!
Thanks so much, Dolphin, my son is just abut to finish three weeks in to Prototype so really hasn't got into the heart of it as of yet (I don't believe). I do know that he is working 7-7 and then going to the gym in SP several nights a week at the YMCA. So far he loves the country up there, loves the weather and isn't too overly concerned about school yet. He did make one comment Monday evening that he didn't get as much accomplished that day as he had hoped.
William I have been hearing some of the same terminology from my sailor's texts. Also terms like delta, which I take it is getting the required amount to be on the curve. One day he said 96% of the class was dinq and had to put in a 14 hr day, only 2 made delta. One day it was double delta. He also mentioned doing well on a computer assisted checkout.
Nuke Mom prayers for you sailors healing and speedy recovery.
Some days you are going to be dinq even though you know all the material because you simply cannot get the checkouts that day to prove it: suppose the instructors are unavailable or the students have briefs all day. But the next day he goes in early and obtains yesterday's signatures and maybe tomorrow's signatures too then he is well ahead of the curve again. It is part of the game. There is a time value to the information so if you keep the knowledge you learned in your head without acting on it (getting signed off) you still fall behind. There will be down days but long as your results over time is moving you ahead of the curve you win. Not unlike investing in stocks and options Lol.
NukeMom/MM/NYprototype, my son fortunately has an amazing talent to retain material....definitely NOT me!!!! So, hopefully, he will be fine. I will have to ask him if he knows the one on crutches. So sorry to hear about your son!! That is terrible! Fortunately things were not worse. I wonder if our boys are in the same class?
Seems like it's good if you have a good memory - that would not work for me. If any one of your kids has mentioned a guy with a broken leg on crutches, well that's my boy! He got hit by a car while walking on the side of the street at 1:30AM going to the grocery store. My son also said they've lost several people lately, some of my favorites! One of the gals got PG!
My son mentioned something similar...like they were given books and access to a library and they had to memorize a ton of stuff by the next day. For the first time, he sounded kind of freaked out.
Well my son is in prototype too and it is STUDY STUDY STUDY just like it was all along LOL. I visited there last weekend. They are a nice bunch of kids. One of his five roomates at his house all of them ETs is on hold until August, while he in the rest have been in class for several weeks now.
Only this time around he tells me they just plunk you down in a room with binders full of operating manuals for the equipment and say "Go!". It is up to you to figure out on your what you have to learn, learn it, and to memorize everything your learned. So learning the game is part of the game. He said the hours are long but he actually seems to like it. He is tired but happy. It is a lot more interesting than power school. I think having a group of compatible roomates has a lot to do with it they are all very upbeat and are joking around all the time.
One of his friends said prototype is also like pledging for a fraternity which struck me as a very astute comment LOL.

Some of the language is harsh.
Mary, okay so we all NEED to know where it is that your son does lunch runs to/from so we can instruct our sailors on where to go for signatures!!! Is that possible!!??
