My son is in Pensacola....he had a cold not too long ago and I asked him if he wanted me to send him anything for it such as cough drops?? He said absolutely not so I sent him multi-vitamins....... They are fully aware of what the consequences are so that type of risque behavior doesn't make sense to me.

Oh no...that's awful! I do know that the Navy if very strict about what their sailors put in their bodies. I don't think what they smoke in a hookah is a drug or herb, I believe it to be just flavored tobacco. My son said he can't even drink a Monster or Red bull as it's against regulations. Not even the slightest herbal concoction as he said the reasoning is that the Navy doesn't know how it would affect their performance in the air. They are required to abide by the same health regulations as the pilots. Sad, right before the holidays.

Kari, sorry I don't remember which squadon Derik is in? No
he didn't end up with Greg either. Apparently there are quite a
few squadrons.
Beth-Shawns PDS is San Diego but he will still get to see the world when
he gets deployed. Says that won't be for at least another 10 months.
Thanks for the info.

I already made reservations for my son to come home for Christmas, flying out of Pensacola. Just read about checking flights out of Mobile, Alabama........did another search and if we had gone this route, would have saved $200!! Wow. I'll remember this. But, I have the same question msvines has, how do they get to Mobile and back again to Pensacola?

It's great to see everyone's back. An update on my son Shawn...he finally received his permanent duty station orders. He will be staying in San Diego. Yeah! Glad that he is staying stateside. He also was assigned ** squadron, he is very excited about that squadron...apparently a very coveted squadron to be in. Can't say which one for obvious reasons. As a mom, I want him to feel comfortable to tell me things however this particular squadron will put him in harms way at some point most likely, but then again so can any squadron. Not so happy about that as a Mom, but I am supportive that he is happy about it! Guess that's all part of being a Navy/military mom!

Kari, I am sorry to hear that it will be so long to you see Derrick again. Just know that we are all here to support you through it.

Beth proud mom of Garrett-How does one get to Navy Newsstand...I couldn't seem to find it. Would love to search for my sons squadron.

I'm here always reading! My son is in Pensacola. Ida fizzled. He did have watch at 3:00 a.m. that morning and had to go outside to another building. I was concerned. He wasn't. I told him if he blew away when he went outside, to make sure he changed direction so he'd blow home. I checked the porch that morning when I woke up. He wasn't there so I knew it wasn't a strong storm. LOL!

Jill, I am sorry to hear about that. But Chris is right, it all happens for a reason. It's just a small set back. I broke my foot when I was a teen and it healed very fast, less than 6 weeks. Since she's young she heal very quickly, maybe less than 6 weeks, so there's hope. Good luck to her and I will keep her in my thoughts and prayers to heal quickly.

Have to share some bad news here.... at our last volleyball game (I'm the head coach of our high school's team) one of our players came down really hard on Kelsey's foot breaking the bone on the top of the foot! I couldn't believe it. She's our star player, and it is pretty bad losing her off of the team for the rest of the season, but also, this is going to delay her training for getting her rescue swimmer contract for at least 6 weeks. She is going to be in a walking cast and can't run or swim for 6 weeks. yuck! She's been working so hard and was almost ready to take the test, but now it will have to be postponed. She's pretty frustrated... but everything happens for a reason and we know this is all in God's timing... but it's still frustrating. Just thought I would share, keep her in your thoughts if you wouldn't mind. Thanks!

Vonee, I'm assuming your daughter just got out of Boot Camp? My daughter is also training to be a rescue swimmer, but doesn't leave for boot camp until next July so she has a lot of time to train at home. I'm not sure what you mean by your daughter was the first to pass the pst in 8 years? I've been talking to a few rescue swimmers who just passed and they said there have been females recently that have passed through swim school. It's tough for women, but it can be done (as I've learned in my research). A guy who went through swim school last October told me of 3 females that passed through when he was there. So as far as it being 8 years since a female passed the pst, I don't know. Maybe just for your recruiting area?
I would love to hear of your daughters progress through school though, as my daughter will be following her soon.

Okay, so what's the deal with my son no longer looking like my son? He looks like his older brother and he's never looked like him before now.......he entered boot camp at 6' 4" and weighed 205. He's still 6' 4" and weighs 185. Boot Camp was in July so in 3 months he's lost 20 pounds which at his height he didn't really need to lose. Actually, he looks REALLY good....I've never seen him so muscular but I fell off my chair at this latest pic he sent......
