Oooohhhhh, beautiful picture - you can see every ripple and it's truly as if you're inside the helicopter looking out - thanks!

Thanks for all the great comments and encouragement, it's nice to know other's understand what these kids go through to get qualified for something like an RSS contract. Kelsey's agreed to slow it down this week and focus on the running and that elusive pullup. She could pass the swim, pushup and situp test today with absolutely no problem, but needs 2 more minutes off the run and a couple of pullups. I've been running the volleyball girls every day after practice, so she's going to use that with some additional running drills, and continue with her upper body training MWF. We'll just swim twice this week to keep it up and hopefully a little extra time to rest will help her body recover. I'm super proud of the fact that she wants this so badly she's willing to do anything to get it, but sometimes the body just needs some rest.
It will be exciting to hear as Linda's son's goes through this process. Linda, I for one am very interested to hear as many details of the training that you can provide. Kelsey really wants to be one of the 'few' females to earn the eventual wings! Thanks!

Hi Linda, mind if I "follow" you and your son? My son has PIR next week, yippee!

Oh meant to say, yes, have to pass the RS physical to get the contract. And from then on, my son had to continue to pass it every month. He was tested every month from last July (2008) to the week before he left this July. His PIR is next week. Woo hoo! Communications will be resumed......

Senior year is extremely stressful - focus on what she needs to pass the physical and just maintain what she already is passing. She can back off of those things. And take some days off........she will be so burned out. My son just graduated high school in June - went to Boot Camp is July. His senior year was the most I'd ever seen him stressed out and he is easy going. We had to pace him. Just set a schedule and tell her to relax.........

That's right, she doesn't go in until next July, but she has to pass the physical readiness test to get her AW contract. She's actually fine on her swim part of the test and her situps. But she needs to shave another couple minutes off her run and needs to get the upper body strength to do the pullups. She's afraid if she doesn't pass the test soon enough then when she re-rates they might push her ship date back. I think that when she re-rates to AW she'll pretty much be able to have her pick of ship dates, is that correct? She sets a goal and then wants to stick to it, but I don't want an exhausted girl running around, you know? Maybe I'll push taking a few days off here and then getting going again next week. I think she just needs to get some good sleep and get refreshed.

So today Kelsey had her first major breakdown causing her to doubt her decision to pursue this. During the summer she was fine with all of the training she was doing because it was all she did. But now school has started and she plays volleyball for the varsity team AND she is still trying to train for rescue swimmer (she wants to pass the physical test by end of October). Her typical day is wake up at 5:45 to get to the pool by 6. Swim for an hour and a half. Off to school until 12:30 (she only has to go half day this year), comes home to do her homework, goes to the gym to work on her upper body workout (3 days a week... still working on those dang pullups!), then volleyball practice for 2 and a half hours, and sometimes still tries to sneak in an hour run before bed. I know she really wants this, but I have suggested to her that she slow down a bit. This morning she just said she is exhausted and was doubting her decision to do AW. She refuses to quit, but I know she is mulling it over in her mind. I am her mom and her volleyball coach and her trainer and I'm having a hard time not letting the mommy side of me coddle her and say 'it's ok, just quit'... the trainer side of me says... 'keep going, you can do it'. I guess this is where the rubber meets the road huh? Finding out what she is really made of. Is it natural to want to quit? What have been your experiences with desire and motivation when the going gets tough? I know it's different having sons because they are naturally built different and I don't think the upper body exercises are as tough, etc.... but I guess I just needed to vent and get some advice from some other moms. How often, if at all, did your RS's express doubt in their decision during their training? Thanks for any feedback you ladies might give. I love reading all of the comments here.

Kari, going to Stevensville....little town outside Missoula. So that is quite a distance from where you are. Well I'm certainly glad to hear that you were able to spend 2 weeks with them. How fun. I can't wait til I get to see Shawn in October, just not sure what dates yet.

Oh Kari, I'm sad for you too. I'm sure that you enjoyed their stay. Has it really been 3 weeks already? Time flies by too quickly. I get to leave tomorrow for Montana....going to see family.

Beth, I would love that information also. I already have alot of stuff that says Navy, or Navy MOM...but one could never have enough!!

Kari, I am sooooo excited for you. 3 WEEKS....WOW! I know that you will enjoy every last minute of their visit. I know we won't hear from you much in the next 3 weeks, and who could blame you!!! I cannot believe you managed to keep that secret. Don't think I could have either. Enjoy your visit....you deserve it!
