Hi All- I am new to this group, thought maybe some of you veteren moms could give my daughter some advice on dieting. She needs to lose a little before her requiter will process her. Thanks- god bless all your Navy Daughters!

My daughter just left March 6 and she was a little worried about the weight. She is 6' and not a poteet girl, plus we went on a cruise the week before she left. She had all of us watching what we ate and that's hard on a cruise ship where food is always there and you are doing nothing but laying in the sun. She made her weight though. Your daughter will just have to really watch what she eats and stay active. Good luck to her.
I have battled weight issues and the best program is weight watchers-you just have to stick with it and add exercise=the sticking with it is the hard part!! but...it will be hard to cheat once she gets to boot camp LOL. My daughter has the opposite problem and was struggling to get her weight up-it was harder than you might think. Good luck
Proudmama,
I don't know how much weight your daughter needs to loose but since she also has to pass a physical test she could use this time to start working on her run and swim. Physical activity will help loose weight especially if she doesn't need to loose too much. Also doing the sit ups and push ups will help with toning. If she needs a little extra, I agree with the Weight Watchers program. What she doesn't want to do is go on any kind of fad diet where she has extreme limits of certain types of foods. This could lead her to just crave those foods even more and can lead to overeating on other foods. Just have her watch portion size. That combined with the physical activity should do the trick.
Let us know how she does - and good luck to her!!!!!
She needs to lose 3-4% of her body fat. She's been working out, but not at the activiity level I think is needed. She is struggling. She lost 5 pds already. I don't think it's sinking in she needs to be ready for the physical tests, and that she'll do the work in Boot- She wants to go to Meps right away and ship out right away, she needs to do the work first. I can't lose the weight for her- although since I started joining her I've lost 7lbs.. yea! I am frustrated, she's frustrated Trying to do the tough love thing, and telling her like it is, not sure if I am getting through to her- if this is what she wants- boot will kick her in the butt, and not sure she'll make it through... Not sure what to do next....
proudmama,
I know how hard it is. They are still just young and immature enough that they don't have that insight like we want them to have. I went through a bit of a struggle with my daughter the last few months of DEP with her run. She just couldn't pass it but would not work on her endurance like I kept suggesting!!! I finally just quit pressing her because she had to either succeed or fail on her own. All the nagging in the world wasn't going to change anything. When she was in bc she failed the run just before graduation. All of a sudden it all sank in!!! They let her have someone run with her as a motivator and to help with her timing and she passed on the second try!!! So as difficult as it is, you have to just step back and let her figure it out on her own. Don't jeopardize the last weeks or months you may have with her by fighting with her. If she wants it bad enough she will achieve her goal!!!
Wish I had read this sooner- last night was not pretty-- we both said some things we shouldn't have. She was making excuses again for not doing a quality work out- My husband and I decided we wouldn't talk Navy to her, and try getting her active more. Things have always come easily to her, except for the working out. She's very smart- really didn't have to try to hard to get good grades. We deliberately bought her prom dress tight, to motivate her. It's a struggle for the whole family, I guess going from a bookworm to being physically fit is going to take some time. I want to see her succeed, but again, worried about the pft's once she makes it boot- she can lose all the weight in the world by walking and jogging, doesn't mean she can do the pushups, her weakness....really stressed out- lost another 3 pds this week, thinking the stress is causing it-
proudmama,
I am so sorry and please believe me when I tell you I understand so well what you are going through. I was exactly the same with my daughter especially the last few months before she left for bc. I wish now I wouldn't have kept pushing her so much. I did feel like our last few months together was strained and didn't need to be that way. Everything is really good with her and I now but I felt some guilt after she left for some of the tension I added. I know you want only the best for your girl and you want her to succeed and not have to struggle unnecessarily but she really does have to get herself there on her own. I think sometimes the more we push the more they push back by doing exactly the opposite!!! Try having a nice talk with her over an afternoon cup of tea and tell her that you want only the best for her but that you aren't going to push her anymore to do her physical fitness workouts. Tell her you will still support her but she is on her own where her workouts are concerned. As hard as it is to step back I think you need to do so for the good of your relationship with your daughter. I'm hoping for all the best for you and your daughter!!! NavyMom hugs to you both!!! {{{ . . }}}
just talked to my daughter and she said there was a girl who has lost 4 inches off her waist since she was first fitted for her dress uniform 2 weeks ago! y daugher was doing some weight training before she left but not any running because she couldn't lose any weight (she is under weight) but was able to make up that and pass her first run test. But your gal has stay motivated, and unfortunately that has to come from her. Focus on why she want to join Navy and what she want to do, keep her eyes on the prize!
My daughter lost weight by going on a low carb diet, She would also eat 5 to 6 small meals aday. She lost 12 pounds in about 2 1/2 weeks and has keep it off. She pretty much eats whats she wants now, she just mainly stays away from sugar and bread. She has been in the Navy almosrt 1 year.
