Hi Melissa!  It was a new thing for me too and had it not been for the support of the ladies here, I'm not sure I'd have made it.

First off, keep your phone glued to you with the ringer on as you never know when she'll call.  Everyone in my church and here at work knew that my phone would not be turned off.  I missed one call and was devastated as you cannot call back. Luckily she called her boyfriend when I didn't answer then called me back when they were done talking.  Whew.

Go ahead and start writing those letters!  Regular letter sized plain white envelope, do not over-stuff as they can be singled out and have to open in front of everyone if it's "different".  Make sure to date the letters and number the envelopes.  They frequently get them out of order so the number helps.

You'll most likely get your "kid in a box" first.  It sat on my sofa for a week.  My sailors dog gave it a thorough sniff then laid by it.  Make sure you check her phone.  Some kids will leave a VM to their parents on it.  Also check in pockets and shoes for hidden notes.

Form letter will come later with PIR information.  My daughter wrote notes to us in the paragraphs and around the margins :)

Our first call came about 10 days after she left.  Some calls she would tell me about things that bothered her or had gone wrong.  I'd stew on it until the next call and when I'd ask her about it, she'd say "oh, that was last week, no big deal".  Sometimes they want to just vent.  Remember, we can't step in anymore but they're in good hands.  Relax and let her be in charge.

Last off, feel free to vent here.  Our daughters are in all stages and range from enlisted to officer, some are career moms some have seen their daughter finish their hitch and have hung around to help new moms.  We are here for you!

Anna, how's the knee coming, are you showing it who's boss?  I'm sure you'll enjoy being back on your travels.  Barr Harbour next summer?

I'm anxiously awaiting my daughter's trip home mid-November.  She'll be helping to judge a drill meet at the high school she attended and I know she's looking forward to that.  She'll be a "returning celebrity" to her ROTC unit.  She'll unfortunately leave before Thanksgiving as her husbands sub is supposed to be in for a few days.  Worst of all, she's taking her dog with her.  I love that dog and will miss her terribly but I will feel better about my daughter being alone during her husbands underways.  Nobody really wants to mess with an 80# dog.  Of course her dog will miss my dogs and vice versa, poor babies, there's no way to explain this to them.

We're having some crazy weather.  Got up to the 60's yesterday and was still 60 this morning.  They're predicting 35-45 mph winds tonight and up to 6" of rain.  If all that comes to pass I may have more than one tree on my house before it's over.  Most of the local area had Trick or Treating last night due to the expected weather, didn't want all those little kids blowing away.

Jennifer2018,

I so understand how you feel.  I've been lucky in that this past year I've actually been living with my Navy daughter so that hubby and I can take care of her house and her pets while she is deployed.  She would be home 3 weeks, deploy 3 to 4 weeks depending on the squadron needs.  This coming deployment will be her last one and then she transfers to FL.  I will miss being with her on a somewhat regular basis but it is time for hubby and I to move on.  I do miss my sailor son as I don't get a chance to see him nearly enough.  He deploys quite often, just came back from Okinawa but I won't get to see him until December.  We are all so proud of our sailor children but we do miss them so much when we can only see them once or twice maybe a year!!!!  Yes, it stinks!!!!

SailorsLIMom,

I agree - love the feeling of being able to help out - even on the little things!!

bbcregular,

So happy to hear your RV travels are going well.  We will be heading to FL for just a little bit this coming spring but then heading up to Maine.  Winter of 2019 we will spend more time there - daughter will be set in Pensacola by then!!!  Thank you for the prayers.  Rehabilitation is taking so long on this knee - it's still so stiff and hard to bend!!!!  I wonder if it will ever loosen up!!!!

B'sNukeMom,

Love the pic - how true!!!!!

We miss our daughter, too,and are so glad she's now closer to home for her training. Just until end of Feb, though--then she'll get her first assignment.   I enjoy small motherly tasks like helping her register her out-of-state car here, things I probably would have said, "It's your car--just do it yourself" about, before the Navy.  The sense of being part of a whole new community has been great, though, on this blog and meeting people I'd never have met  before.  It gets better with time. They grow up. They leave home. They come back, but not in the same way--lucky for us, do we really want aging teenagers around the house again? ;))

Navy life is definitely crazy!  I am learning in just the short time I’ve been here that in some ways it doesn’t get easier missing your loved one. I think this is the hardest thing I’ve encountered as far as my daughter goes. It probably makes it worse because she is the oldest.

Comment by Blondie on October 30, 2018 at 11:28am

I agree 100%.  I had to keep telling myself, this was Her choice.  As long as she was happy and healthy.... Hugs to all going through this.

bbcregular, Good for you guys!   I hope all goes as planned for you.  I remember those years, seemed like our daughter and SIL was always on opposite sides of the world.  Loving it that she's out (because of baby) but I know she was Much Happy when she was active duty.  and they live so far away we still don't get to see them as much as we'd like.  Can't wait till hubby and I can retire and Travel (to see our kids),

We just got back but only got a week with them this time.  Joe is still in the ME, they've changed his home date so many times, we think they're keeping him!  His next deployment starts next June and he has 3 out of state training sessions to complete before hand.  So we are very anxious!  Navy life has always b ween cray but seems like it's getting worse not better :(  It's been 11 + years and counting. LOL
