Sheila...My son is a HT fresh outta A school and just 3 days on his ship.  He has unclogged 2 toilets (one took almost 6 hours of working in not so nice stuff) Is that where the expression "poop deck" came from?  makes sense!  Anyway he has also fabricated two things out of materials hung over the edge of the ship to weld, sanded paint and these are the things he remembered to tell me about. He is working on average 10 hours a day. Oh and while he waited for his ship to come into port he drove around Command Staff.  I asked him if it was what he expected it to be and he said "yup".   So I guess your son will have a good idea of what he will be doing as well.

Oh and he got his nick name already which I won't repeat on here.  He was a little embarrassed to tell it to his MOTHER.

My son leaves for BC on the 24th of August, 2011! He is nervous!  He is a hull technician.  I don't really know too much about what that entails, but I guess we'll find out soon!  I think his PIR should be on or around the 18th of October, correct?

@bobbie (ship03/div250)

PIR was 4 years ago (almost) so let's see how much I think I remember. After the 2-3hr ceremony of PIR, the new sailors met with their families, briefly then had to be out of the boot camp dorms by a certain time maybe 330/430ish, then they were allowed to go on liberty, mine got the weekend off.  I drove up so I had lots of his "civie" stuff which I moved to his new "ship"/dorm area the next day.  The 1st thing I think he wanted after graduation was his cell phone back. :)  Poor kid, I think he was coming down with a cold so he really just wanted to sleep!  but I had a room with a kitchenette in it so managed to bring/buy some stuff to make his favorite food for him and the rest of the family that got to come see him.  He just had to be back I think 930PM ish on the Sunday.  good luck with yours, hope this info helps.

@bobbie (ship03/div250).   Congrats on the PIR.   Hope you get the chance to go see it.  Mine was granted the weekend off as the Hull Tech  A school was in GL.  Some are on what they call "grad and go" where they only get to spend a few hours before they are shipped to the area of their next school. when my HT son went through A School it was somewhat varied in time as some of the classes are go at your pace.  He PIR'd in early October and was on his assignment/ship in March.  He tried to go at a decent pace, some of the classes they have to wait for the class to start or get enough people for the class, etc.  So it's hard to actually say how long the class will take for him.
