HisMom and Riptide11/128 what ship's are they headed to?  If the ship is out to sea when they join the ship the Navy could make them join the ship "in progress".  Where they would fly them to a expected nearby port and they make arrangements to get to the ship, from there.   If it's in port at the time the sailor gets there, all the better they don't have to fly off somewhere in hopes of "finding" the ship soon.

@bobbie (ship09/div250)  hull tech is a "fix it person" with some emphasis on welding.  Mine has mentioned plumbing, welding, of course probably "jerryrigging", etc. as part of his tasks.

@Denise the HTFA rating they start with is Hull Tech Fireman Apprentice?.  But they have a fireman rating as part of their jobs as well.

They do their first school BECC (basic engineering) and then A School with the specialty of their rate in GL before they move on to ships, land based units, or their C school, which is various places.

HisMom, I'm not sure if mine is headed out to sea right away, but I do know that he's been assigned a ship....not to a shipyard. I guess it all depends on whether the ship will be in port for a while or heading out right away. We will be on opposite coasts....of course, GL is a long way from WA state, as it is. LOL

Hi bobbijk, My son is currently in A school in GL. First your son needs to get through BC. He then, will likely do his A school training BECC there in GL. We thought my son would be attending C school there, but it appears he will be heading for Norfolk, VA  aboard the USS Iwo Jima and will continue his training there.

Hi all!  I'm new to the group.  My son has recently completed A school at Great Lakes as HTFA and has been assigned his first duty station aboard the USS Theodore Roosevelt (in dry dock at Norfolk) and is living in Portsmouth.

My sailor's fb site published some new pics, recently of their latest "cruise".   I'm sure you can all tell exactly what he looks like, but it's nice to know he's alive and well when they publish the pictures and they are so far from home.   btw,  Fireman is part of their duties and "rate" acronyms at first.   The 2nd one is a few weeks ago them sorting supplies/mail after an at sea delivery.

It was nice of people to walk up to him and shake his hand.  It happened in the restaurant, out to dinner, in the mall.  That made him feel really special.  Made me feel special too.  After all I did make him myself!
