@Brenda   shellback is when they cross the equator for the first time in their lives, not sure where the ship has been but Japan is well North of the equator.

HT's do spend time on the decks, they fix anything and everything all over the ship.

HT can be a varied job.   My son has commented on not only welding all kinds of things but they have to deal with the plumbing as well.  He likes to weld so that is why he chose that rate.  He went from PIR to A school in the same area and then to a ship.  He's been in almost 4 years now.  The A school at the time was kinda a go at your own rate but with some limitations and time constraints.  They could not take forever to do some of the sections.  He has moved up in rank as he learns more things and test for the next level.  I think that they have to be in one rate a couple of years before they can apply to change.  Changes in rate are not always granted..it's based on job availability and of course the ever popular "the needs of the Navy".  Welding is a in demand job from what I hear so when he gets out there is possibility of an income. Let's face it there is alot of metal on the ships and defending/rebuilding is what the Navy is about.

they also had a Hull Technician coin on ebay that was cool.  Had room to engrave maybe a date or something small on.  I liked that too

Thank you for the website.  I will go check it out.  My son's birthday is coming up and I think that would make a great present

vision-strike-wear.com is the website with the t-shirt

I had gotten him one before from visionstrike.com I believe that was what it was called.  It was pretty cool as well.  I love them both and my son was thrilled with the first one.

HisMom-where did you find the Hull Technician t-shirt.  I would love to get one for my son.

I found a great looking hull technician T-shirt that I ordered for my son and a Hull technician coin as well.  These are bootcamp grad. gifts.  I am sure I will come home with them but when he gets leave after A school maybe he can take them with him.
