Brenda-didn't you say your son was in Japan?  I hope you have heard from him and all is well.

Susan-My son was exactly the same DC and changed to HT.  I was glad.  Where was he deployed to?   How long was he gone?  I know they are all different but just curious.

Brenda and Susan-How long have your Sailors been in the navy?

When my son signed up he was single and unattached.  He is now in his 4th week of boot camp.  Since then he has announced to his sister that he is "going out" with someone from home.   I thought that was interesting.....not really going anywhere "out"  but whatever floats your boat.  I hope she is the very faithful type or she will crush his heart.

Please set me straight.  I get the feeling that not too many think highly of the Hull Technician Job.  I think it has a lot of very useful components.  What do others in the Navy think of Hull Technicians (not that my son is going to care what they think as long as HE likes it)

Gosh Brenda what a difference a hair cut made on your son.  lol  What a good looking family you make.  Yeah I am sure the nicknames are not nice but I bet they all have them.  My son chose DC first and was called in and told to change his job.  This one definately has more "trades" built in if he chooses to not stay with the Navy.  I think he will like it.  I just want him to have some really good experiences that he would otherwise never venture into.

We will see.  I am glad I found this group.  Thanks to all that responded.

Hello, I am Liz-a future HT mom.  Son is just in BC but heading in the HT direction.  I was amazed at how much a HT does.  What a great job to pick. I am very proud of him but after reading some of what you wrote I am a little concerned. My son thinks that he will finish A school and move right onto the next level.  One recruiter told him this would happen and another told him that is not how it goes.  You go to school and then work at it for 2 years and then you move on to the next level.  This made more sense to me.  At least then they could see if they even liked the job to continue.  I don't know how true this is but he was told that there are only about 2,000 HTs in the navy.  Does that sound right?  Kind of made me think.....why doesn't anyone want that job. LOL I read on the "Dirtiest Jobs" website that HT was one of them.  Then they went on to tell about a blockage in the sewage system and what the HT had to do about that.  Well my boy, if all this is true you will have learned a valuable lesson about not believing everything you are told.  At least he will be able to work on his mustang when he is home.  So tell me all you wise from experience HT moms, what exactly is he in for?

Hi Alicia,

My son graduated last friday and started A school this week. He was told a few weeks ago that it is 19 weeks, but then when we saw him over the weekend he said it could be less.. As soon as I find out for sure I'll post to let you know

Thank you Brenda and Sarah for the support and you both have been a wealth of knowledge.  I'm learning that I need to take everything one step at a time because when you think you got it...it changes!  :o)  Have a great day.

Okay, now I'm really confused.  My son's recruiter told him that he would go to A school in GL then go to C school right away after A school.  Both A and C schools would take him two years to complete.  After the completion of A and C school then he could be deployed somewhere.  Doesn't sound like this is the case.

I'm also confused about C school.  My son first told me that he would be at Great Lakes another 20 weeks after he graduated in January (A and C school).  Now he is telling me that he is not going to C school right after A school but will be going sometime in the next 2 years and he should be leaving Great Lakes sometime in April for a base.  Does anyone know if this is true or is my son just as confused as I am?

I didn't realize C school was right in Great Lakes.  I was told it was on a coast (San Diego, Virginia, Florida).  Do they automatically go from A school to C school?  If not, what do they need to do to go to C school?

Thanks Teresa I got the request.  :)
