I guess I was off by a little I missed the E1 HTFA (apprentice) and my son is now an E4 and the HT3. but the ones in the middle were correct.

Fina R~SHIP 13 DIV 149 -when my sons rating was "HTFN" he explained it was Hull Tech Fireman which I guess is one step above HTFR Hull Tech Fireman Recruit the first "rating" he had. now that he has made E3 he's a HT3 I'm not sure I will ever understand the Navy "rates".. It is all connected to their job specialties and how high of "rank" they are. I think the A/F where is just a rank is so much easier to remember. I don't know if this helps any.

ColoradoMom.. my son PIR'd in Oct 07 he started A school shortly after and finished by early March 08. There is some flexibility as they have modes that they can go slower or faster depending on how studious they are. and if they are going for advanced training or not. Some of it depends on can they get in the classes they need right away or have to wait for the "next" one or not as well. Nothing I've seen yet with my son's side of the Navy has been set to definite schedules.

My son graduated on Friday and will start A school as a Hull Technician. Can anyone tell me how long A school for HT is?

rainierpansy, for my son, his HT - A school/BECC training was from Oct to March some of it was a go at your own pace school in Great Lakes...he lived in a quarters on base that were similiar to a dorm .. he was allowed to have some of his stuff brought up to him...as I drove up for his PIR . most of it had to come back home when he moved to his first duty station..no space for it. for him he was not in group that are immediately send to another city for school..so I got to spend the weekend with him in Great Lakes (his sister lived in the area as well as a motel) before he had to start school the following Monday. for those being send elsewhere time with their family was only hours long. hope some of this helps.

Hi, ShpRdOftrUth is my son. He is stationed in the Great Lakes area for now. He is kind of working close to me till his nxt assignment. I will ask him to response to you but he was mainly stationed out of San Diego.

Susan, sorry forgot one more thought on it. HT or the hull tech part has a lot of welding training as part of their schooling.
Comment by Elane on July 7, 2009 at 4:56pm
HTFN is hull tech, fireman.
It's my understanding that the hull techs and probably some other rates have the fireman rating attached as part of their job. FN would be a step up from FA (fire apprentice) they get that about the time the make E3.. or atleast that seems to be the way my HTFN son explained it to me.
his A school lasted from Oct to early Mar at Great Lakes ..but there is some variance to the time as they have a certain time to get it done but some can go faster. also they have to take in consideration when the next available class opens up after they finish one "mod". hope this helps

RuthAnn I think my son is happy with his job choice but maybe not the ship they put him on. (he went in wanting to be a welder) In A school he was given a wish list to complete. several places and types of ships they'd like no guarantees that they get them..for some it's a dream list. some get something off their list. My son got one of his place choices but not the top of his list. He didn't request a ship and now wishes he had. I'll ask him if he knows where those school might be. He's been on a Amphib ship for 1 year now.

Welcome RuthAnn.
The HT part is hull tech..for my son that means welding..or so I'm led to believe..it seemed funny when I found out that also meant snipe..I asked him so now I'll know if I need to go on a snipe hunt.. he was clueless.. It wasn't as funny when I had to explain the joke to him. what more do you want to know?

My son PIR'd early Oct and then was at his ship in early March after completing A school & BECC in GL for Hull Tech but I think they've made some changes that some of it is how fast they can study some of it and pass the various tests. It also has something to do with when they actually start that school after PIR. if they have to wait for a class to start or get right in.
