Anna, according to Wikkipedia the old CTA/CTO/CTM ratings were combined into CTN (Network).
Newer rating specialties are:
CTA-(ADMIN)
CTI -Interpretive (RadioTelephone and Foreign Language)
CTM-(MAINT) install and repair
CTR-Voice communications
CTT-Non COMM signals, Intel (ELINT)
I had forgotten that you had thought about changing over but I do remember you saying that before. A loss for the Navy. But a gain for N4M!

Mary,
You are the absolute sweetest!! Thank you. Did I ever tell you that when I did my active reservist time after my regular navy enlistment, I tried to crossrate to CTO (Cryptology Technician Operator). I don't even know if they still have CTO, but I would have LOVED to be considered a crypty-critter!!!!!!!

I've also wondered how they skipped "B" school.

Anna, my cousin told me right after Chris enlisted that the IS guys were called spooks but then as I looked around it seemed that the CTs were called spooks or crypty-critters. I decided on my own that to keep the rates separate I figured the Cryptologists could be crypty-critters and the Intels could be spooks. My cousin said it really does not matter both jobs are very secretive. It's good to see you back on. I know, you have been on but fairly quiet all the same. I was getting worried about you and bought you a card today. It will be out with tomorrow's mail.

Valerie, I hope all is going better with your Mom?

I don't suppose we will hear much from Rene this week. I don't blame her.

Has anyone heard from Dawn lately? She and Ellen both have been pretty quiet.

Dyon, I believe you are right. I don't keep up with the Officer stuff since that's a ways off if ever for Chris. If he ever makes it as far as Alpha-boy then I'll have to start to worry about that kind of stuff.

Hello Everyone:

We are back from a super weekend 'in the hills'!! I'm going back through all of your postings, and going to attempt to answer your questions and comments.

Mary - Chris' mom: In regards to someone 'coming out' of OCS - if I am not mistaken, the rate would be Ensign??

Liz: My name is pronounced as Dee-on; my folks used the French boys' way of spelling, thinking it would be easier on me during school & life. OH!! If they ONLY knew!

Valerie - Wes' mom: I too have gone through and edited some posts - striving to be more candid. Please go to my page - request that I be your friend, and I'll let you know more on the 'Alpha' boy!

Valerie: Sending more prayers for your mom, you, and your family!!!

Rene: 'Today's the Day' - YYIIIPPPPEEEE!!!!!!!

Ann: Yes, through the years the 'Alpha Boy's' verbage has definitely changed. There are times he almost talks as if I was the child - instead of the other way around LOL Many Times Over!! I honestly believe it's the nature of the work, and their training. Don't overstress over your Navy Boy's way of talking - just remind him WHO changed HIS diapers - that usually brings a round of GAFAWS!!!!

General Comments: Well, winter has come again - just when I was getting used to the idea of SPRING!! Here's a photo from Saturday, crossing the Yellowstone River, with the ice jam trying to 'go out'. A front came through - our temps are below zero, the clouds have been dark and heavy since yesterday, and the snows have been flying.

We enjoyed a great weekend with dear husband's relatives! His aunt fed us such good food - and so much food!

Please consider yourselves hugged! Great to 'be back'!!

Ann,
I haven't noticed it much with my son ChrisA because he has been in for awhile so I think he has learned how do deal with stress and secrecy and such. But I do notice a difference in talking to my daughter. Sometimes she calls and will start talking about her Navy life and when I start to ask questions - just showing interest or concern or whatever - she all of a sudden says - I gotta go - I'll call you later. I'm often times left with gee was it something I said!!! I don't think it's just something with the IS rate as my daughter is a PS. I wonder if they just feel so protective about their independence and feel like we're prying or just don't want us to think anything is going wrong - - - - - I just don't know. But I experience the same thing you mention. Anyone else have any insights?
Anna

P.S. Sometimes I write it off as PMS - guess that wouldn't apply to your son now would it?!?!?!?!

Mary,
Thanks for the answer - but you know I've been in the Navy for years and associated with it many more years through my kids - I just don't recall a rate called crypty-critter!!!!!

Gotta love it!!! he-he-he :)

Ann, I believe a lot of it has to do with the secretcy of the job. Chris and I start talking and sometimes he will start to say something and then just shut up and grin. I know we can't carry that conversation any further. He does not call home nearly so often now so maybe that's his way of letting me know that what they are doing is not open for discussion. Maybe it's the gained senses of responsibility and level of maturity.

Anna, Patti Sue didn't answer so I'll tell you her son is in Monterrey for crypty-critter school.
