Hello Navy Moms,
I just found this group and thought I'd say Hello. I have a son (also a Chris) who is a fleet returnee changing rate from AO to IS. He spent a few weeks in GL in Dec getting uniforms reissued and such and went to Dam Neck mid January. He just started his A school this week. I haven't heard from him since the weekend and I don't want to bother him until this next weekend. This new rate is all new to me so I know very little about what he will be doing this time around. I had a hard enough time when he was loading 500 pound bombs on aircraft on the flight deck of the carriers over in the gulf. I thought after he got out he'd take on a more safer line of work. Well he decided he liked life in the Navy better than out so he went back in but wanted something other than AO (no call for this in the outside world!!!)
I also have a daughter who just went in July 08 and is stationed in Washington at Kitsap. She is a PS.
Hope to get to know all you other IS moms and enjoy sharing joys and trials with all of you. This website really does help all us moms when having to deal with our up and downs of being a Navy Mom.

Valerie, I'm so sorry to hear that Wes is still having such a difficult time. I hope it does not "get to him" and get him so dicouraged that he looses interest. He's been through so much already that surely he can hold on just a bit longer. How many weeks into school is he? I know it is a very tough class. I've read where many fail but if he has made it this far, I pray the Lord will carry him through.

Dawn, I did see one other IS group on the "Groups" page and they put the IS rate symbol there. There is another one that I've seen also, but it's not the rate symbol. Have you seen the one that has the eagle with the sonar headphones on that says, "In God we trust...all others we Monitor? I've seen that one for t-shirts and a few other items and think it's cool. I tried to upload a pic the other day and it did not work but maybe I can change my profile photo for a while and you can copy the one I've got. I'm sure somewhere there has to be a site that has ALL the rating symbols. I'll look around too.

Hi Dawn! I had kind of wondered why you had not already joined the group! Glad that your son is still set to graduate. I know you are proud of both your daughter and son. So, have you already packed your bags for your trip to the Islands? lol Your son's name is Chris also if I remember correctly from talking with you at the "A" school group a couple of weeks ago? This is great for those of us who have kids in "A" school or holding to class up. Now we have as many moms who have "experience" under their belts! Good luck to your son as he completes his schooling. I think either strike or NSW is what my Chris will put on his dream sheet. He has not really given a preference. I think as long as he can make that trip to Greece he will be satisfied with any job. Congrats Mom to your almost official IS!!

I also see that the NAVY Reserves moms are featured as well! Way to go ladies!

No, I did not see that Rene, but I seldom go to the other pages. I follow this one, the "A" school moms, our PIR group which is pretty much defunct now, and the q&a w/a recruiter, oh and of course my NC moms, where it all began for me. I'll have to go check it out!

Rene. from what I've read, the Service Dress Uniforms will remain although I had read a while back that they were wear testing them also to try some modifications. They were going to try to replace some of those 14 buttons on the pants with zippers to make it easier for the sailors. I think they were also looking at putting a zipper on the shirt as well just to make it a little easier to get it over their heads. I could be wrong about the shirts.
The working whites that are being replaced are the ones like his recruiter was likely wearing when they signed him up. White pants, white short-sleeved shirt, and either a white or maybe a black belt? That was considered the summer or tropical uniform. That was the uniform that Chris was looking forward to wearing. I think he is going to try to get the pants and belt this summer before they are gone. He bought a shirt through NJROTC a couple of years ago. He just has to have the ROTC patch taken off the sleeve.
I'm glad you have been able to get some information on the Reservist Program. I hope Jared is able to get the paperwork done and approved. It will certainly help him at college and work. Best of luck to him.
Like I was told not too long ago, sometime we ask the Lord to help us but then we try to get in there and do it. If we ask Him for help, then what makes us think He needs our help? Sometimes if we ask for His will to be done and ask for His help, maybe we should step back and give Him a chance to work. Pray for Jared to have the wisdom to try to make his desires happen and strength to carry through with whatever does happen. And pray that his mom has peace in accepting, that it is being done according to God's plan.
Have a good day everyone.
Valerie, How is Wes doing trying to sit through class this week?

Hi Wendy! I'm not sure but I think it's Operations Intel or Operational Intel? There are I think 4 or 5 different specialties in Intel that's where "C"school comes in. IS is the "generic" rate and then there is the specialty. I found a site that tells those specialties once before. I think it was at about.com. You can type US NAVY IS in your search engine and see what you come up with. At opne time I even found a place where it told some of the more specific duties involved at different levels as they are given more responsibilities. Don't ask me where I found that though, I honestly don't remember. One of these women farther along can tell you a lot more than I can.
Did you hear from Jason today? How is he doing other than glad to be out of Siberia? I talked to Chris at lunch today and he said they were getting a cold rain also.

Good I hope that can be cleared up quickly.
Comment by Mary (Chris' mom) on January 27, 2009 at 7:26pm
Good luck Rene, and best of luck to Jared. Chris says there are also lots of guys who have come back in from the fleet to finish school. Maybe if they think it is going to take a while for "C" school to class up they send them out to where they need them for a while? I'm only making a wild guess there. Considering their limited amount of duty and the long amount of time to train in Intel...I don't know anything about reserves though, as I said it's a wild guess. I have read other posts though that a lot of the reservist don't get more than the basic training. That's a shame too when you have someone half way trained, and they are eager to learn more. God has a plan Rene. Try to remember, even though I would have a hard time with it too.
