Lol, BirdsOfAFeather! It does not matter if you watch YouTube, your neighbor's video, or anything else...you will get goosebumps and tears of pride and joy. Take  several Klenex with you for sure! It is always a totally new experience when it is your own marching in. I will have to say also that those of us who had to fight the January cold to see PIR have a more difficult time seeing our kids as they come past the bleachers. My son's PIR group opted for earmuffs, scarves, and trench coats at the last minute when the snow would not give them a break. With the coat, hat, earmuffs, and scarf on all those short-haired kids, they look pretty much the same. They do not take all that stuff off until they are in formation. They looked like a sea of "little bandits". All we could see when they came by was the eyes, upper nose, and maybe their eyebrows.

One of the moms whose son PIR'ed the week before my Chris, walked in and asked the young man in uniform if he knew where her son was (she of course told him her son's name). He said, "I know he is very close by, ma'am." She kept looking around and all the sailors in that corner started snickering. The young man finally walked back up to her and he said, "Mom, would you recognize me if I took my hat off and put my nametag on?" She had spoken to her own son and truly did not recognize him!

They really do change a lot. Yes, there will be tears of pride and tears knowing that their lives really are different now. The roller coaster continues.....

Mary (Chris' Mom), I am going to PIR. Can't wait! I held off watching any of the live streaming so I would be really excited about all of it.

BirdsofAFeather, are you going for PIR? If so, I hope you have fun. It's an awesome thing to watch.

I don't know. My son graduates 8/16 and that's where he's going too.

Once there are enough sailors to make a class they will start a new A school class. Your sailor may start a week or two after arriving or it could take several weeks for them to class up. Congratulations on soon having a sailor and an IS at that!

Navy Hugs!

Can anyone tell me when IS school starts?  My son graduates basic on 9/27/13.  Just wondering when potential classes start.

Elenasmom, that is good news. I'm glad she does not have to be given a new assignment. Thanks my son has worked hard and come so close a couple of times. Take care while your sailor is deployed. Maybe she will get to go somewhere awesome like my son who recently went to Australia for 5 days!

Thank you Mary for the response. I didn't realize. I just talked to my daughter & she said they made room for her so she's good to go now.

Congratulations on your son making SOQ!

I have not heard of it happening recently, but I know it does happen. It's like subs, SEALs, and front line combat have been off limits to women until recently. Now female officers who want to command a sub must wait until there are subs available that can accommodate females. There are only either 2 or 4 subs that I last read about that can do that, and those spaces were filled quickly by women who wanted to be on subs. Berthing in ships and barracks is much the same. Not only is the gender a consideration in where to place a person and his/her belongings for 6 or 8 mos but people of the same payrate E4, E5, E6, O2, etc are berthed together. With advancements comes slightly better quarters when available, there is a type of peer relationship (they are all supervisors so they can discuss how they have handled situations and get advice from the others), and most have been in about the same amount of time with the same pay so there is not as much petty jealousy, rivalry, etc. Unfortunately, it is the growing pains of our military trying to place women into the non-traditional roles they want to do. Maybe in another 10 years the Navy and other branches will find a way to create gender neutral berthing and jobs. Until then women will have to continue to work towards further advancements in equality.

My news is that my son made SOQ for this quarter!! That automatically puts him in the running for SOY so he is thrilled. He was so happy that the IS department is getting some much deserved recognition. He says the whole department deserves it but he will gladly take it for them.

Hi everyone. It's been a while since I've been on. My daughter text my husband & I last night & said she may not get to go on deployment because there is no birthing for 1 IS female on her ship. She is not to happy about this because then she'll also get reassigned to a different team & she really likes her team. They work very well together. Not sure what is going to happen now. Has anyone heard of this happening?
