purplegiraffe - The IS rate is overmanned and last advancement cycle out of the 600+ IS3's that took the advancement exam only somewhere in the area of 20 were actually advanced. Right now the IS field is extremely overmanned and advancement is at a standstill. Anyone up for orders in the IS field anytime in the next 3 years minimum is at risk for being PTS'ed out. (PTS is a program designed to keep the best in the rate and either rerate an individual or separate them from the Navy). If you have any questions regarding this let me know and i would be glad to answer them to the best of my ability.

Well the CT field is a little narrow when it comes to C schools and careers after the Navy, I have heard better things about IS.  Yes CT's are still great too! :)

Better than CTM? CTMs are good too and we used to have some Cripty-Critter moms on this page since it is about the closest thing to IS. ripty-Critters, Spooks all welcomed here. :-)

Velvet, it depends on how he wants to plan his route. If he has the finances and wants to go in with a higher rank (entry officer) he might want to get his degree first. If he wants some experience, maturity, and money for college then enlistment might be his better choice. He can work on college courses while he is on ship or at shore duty although for ISes it can be difficult. It is a small group so they are on call a lot. My son's priorities also are not on college but on learning all he can about various cultures and the areas he visits and lives in. So it simply depends on your sailors' interest as to which path they wish to take. As purplegiraffe says, it's more ASVAB scores and a good, clean background.

They do not need college to get the rate IS, just a squeky clean record, good asvab scores, and no financial problems (IS'ers have very high top secret clearances)  Also, every family member must be US born or from a low risk country.  my son chose this rate because we have friends that are now officers and are Intel officers.  They have told us great things about the advancement in rate and the good job opportunities after the Navy.   I was  a CT brancher, as well as my hubby, so we were shopping around for something for my son better than CTM.   (that was our second choice at MEPS)  But he qualified for IS and is excited about school in VA.  Good Luck.

New IS'er today!  MY son joined the Navy today, he leaves for boot camp 06/14/12, then will go to IS A school.  We have friends that are still Navy and Intel officers so they are giving us lots of info. he is very excited.

Just T-The schools for OpIntel start more frequently than the others. That is what a majority of the sailors end up in. Besides it is a shorter school. It generally does not take as long for them to class up but most of the time they do not like to start or be mid way through an A school or C school during the long holidays.

Mom2aSailor-Congrats on that C school start. It's a load off her mind I know. :-)

Se is a reservist and will do Op-Intel.  Most of her class will be doing the same so we are hoping, praying and crossing everything that they are not on hold very long.
