Yes, you can get them at the PO or you can go online and set up an account. When you call, place an order for the military kits. They are free and deliver right to your door. You also get a large roll of priority mail tape, customs documents, address labels, etc.
tntsather913,
They are free from the US Post Office. Just go into any post office and ask for the military flat rate boxes.
Laura, You are correct. I don't know why they never learn. When my son was there we went throught the same thing. Certified is for documents that are signed for. Insured is for packages. I think the instructors all have a list they must memorize' and no one has bothered to revise that statement in the list. lol The cost of insuring a box is also considering the value of the items in the box. I have sent things in the Military boxes and insurance was almost nothing. I have also shipped in odd boxes and the insurance was over $20. That's when I learned it is actually cheaper at times to use two Military boxes rather than one larger box. It sure was hard though squashing his peacoat into one of those small boxes!
I hope everyone has a great day!
Hi julieb - I double checked with the post office. Certified only pertains to letters. I send the packages insured and I insured them for $200 each. The cost of insurance was an additional $2.85 for each box.
Hope this helps.
My son is also at Dam Neck now. I'm just happy that we can talk on the phone again!
Laura, hahaha! That's why most of us are here...we had so many questions and still do sometimes! Congrats on having a sailor and please tell him thank you for his service.
To other moms, dads, wives, DEPpers and folks at our page...Please tell your sailors a special thank you today. It's people like them who are keeping us all more safe here at home.
Get ready for a possible list of questions everyone.
My son landed at Dam Neck today!
And so it begins...
Carl, Glad you had a safe and fun trip! I probably won't be doing that ship soon (expenses) but I am getting to go on a Tiger cruise before long on the Bush. I have heard from some of the folks at the Bush page that their Family Cruise was awesome as well. Maybe I will get the opportunity to do one someday. Yes, I have heard that saying about Fuji...I have also heard of a few fools :-)
It's hard to believe how far our men and women have come in under 3 years. Cam is an "Old Salty" and Chris is a Korean Conflict Veteran who is getting salty himself now. Nothing new happening except our group (the BUSH and its ships) had a nice weekend in Dubai but are now back out somewhere. Will be interesting to see how he compares shore duty to ship duty in a couple of months.
I hope all have a good day and Carl, I will be looking forward to the email and hopefully seeing a picture or two.
Navy Hugs to all, Mary
