I have dreamed of being in the Navy for five years now. I recently dated for two years a young man who is now in nuke school. Ever since watching him graduate from OCS last May I have dreamed of myself wearing that uniform and serving as my ancestors have. I am aiming for SWO or PAO. The recruits loved me when I went to see them over the week. They told me chances are slim but told me to work on volunteer work and anything else to make my application stronger. I am a student at OU studying Fine Arts. I love it, but I also truly love the Navy. I want to do military propaganda portrait prints and sculptures when I am done. Here is my problem. I have been recently diagnosed with PRE-GLAUCOMA. I feel like my life has been torn to shreds lately. I understand that Glaucoma is a disqualifying factor to serve in the military. But what I am asking is HAVE YOU KNOWN ANYONE TO RECEIVE A MEDICAL WAIVER FOR PRE-GLAUCOMA? I know it will slim my chances even more, but I really don't want to give up. I am so sure I could make an amazing officer. I want it so bad that it hurts to even think of if. My glaucoma has not effected my vision at all nor am I receiving any treatments. I am afraid that if I go through the long process that when I go to MEPS they will find my high pressures in my eyes and ill diagnose me. My dr. says he is watching for it because my readings are so high usually, until I take the more precise test which just show me on the high side of normal. I need your advice ladies and gentlemen.

UPDATE! I am no longer labeled as 'pre-glaucomic' by my doctor. Thanks so much for those who have helped!!! I have decided to go until I can't go any further. I recently have been approved as a Big Sister! One small step at a time! I also have read more up on medical qualifications and as long as my eyes stay under 22 pressures then I am golden and they will not detect any further problems.

Hi Sara BlueBerry,

I would STRONGLY encourage to get a second opinion-- from a Board Certified Ophthalmologist, not an Optometrist.  I am a certified Ophthalmic Technican and  Proud Navy Mom.

Many, MANY people carry on lives with perfect Vision who have pressures that are somewhat high.  A good Ophthalmologist will tell you, that eye pressures are as individual as people are.  Just because your pressures read higher does NOT mean your optic nerve is getting damaged.  Just having high eye pressure, "Ocular Hypertension" is not necessarily pre-glaucoma.

Find a Glaucoma Specialist MD and get evaluated, things may be OK.  He/She may be able to find that the readins for you are completely normal.

Did the eye DR test you with an Air Puff (Non COntact Tonometer) or Tonopen?  Those are not accurate for assessing Glaucoma.  in addition, High pressure by itself does NOT mean you have Glaucoma.  The MD needs to assess the health of your unique optic nerves.

I hope this helps!!!!

Email if you have quesitons.

I have had been tested with a tonopen and done a field of vision. My endings are very large and the center of the head shows a large opening. My dr. is one of the only specialist even close to me. He never fully diagnosed me. He waits to see if any damages show up in my peripheral. He is highly concerned. I am worried that when it comes time for MEPS they will rule me straight out. I heard they are pretty tough and only run an air puff test. He did say that I am high end of normal for me. It all just looks really bad. You think I have a chance?

you encourage me! I hope that if MEPS reads me wrong I will be able to get evaluated by another dr. and obtain a waiver!

Being honest Sara....it really sounds like you have a very skewed view of what military service means.  Not to mention you also sound very immature; I'm guessing that's why you're defaulting to something such as SWO or PAO.

Take it from me, the Navy isn't for you if you're planning on being the "cute little ditsy thing" that sleeps her way to the top.

Wow! I didn't think I sounded like that at all! I don't know where the hell you got any of that! You are rude as heck! Just because I am getting my degree in art doesn't mean that I am an less smart than yourself! I plan on going to RISDI when I finish serving, if you don't know what that means then you should look it up. It is one of the most prestigious schools for design in our country. I didn't even go into all the detail of why I want to join. I am AF legacy. My grandfather was one of the first flying pilots of Hispanic decent. You don't know half. I would suggest you keep your trap shut unless you wish to add to the topic of GLAUCOMA. I am not even going to try to explain myself to you because you seem highly immature yourself with your response. Please take your cyber bullying and politely "shove it" ma'am. You have no idea who you are talking to and what is going on in my life. I also run a premier native wetland plant nursery, the only of it's kind in my state. I am also currently working side by side with several state agencies and universities, OSU, OU, OWRB, OCC, ONC, and ArmyCor.
