OPSEC - Navy Operations Security
Always keep Navy Operations Security in mind. In the Navy, it's essential to remember that "loose lips sink ships." OPSEC is everyone's responsibility.
DON'T post critical information including future destinations or ports of call; future operations, exercises or missions; deployment or homecoming dates.
DO be smart, use your head, always think OPSEC when using texts, email, phone, and social media, and watch this video: "Importance of Navy OPSEC."

In light of observed changes and impact of the Coronavirus Delta Variant and out of an abundance of caution for our recruits, Sailors, staff, and guests, Recruit Training Command is restricting Pass-in-Review (recruit graduation) to ONLY fully immunized guests (14-days post final COVID vaccination dose).

Hi ladies, my son is in 02-11, will graduate soon from OCS. He wanted to take a car but it didn't work out. However the candidates from their class started a facebook group, and arranged to meet up the night before they entered OCS. The ones who didn't have cars have been storing their stuff in the cars of classmates who did drive. I also heard something about being able to store some stuff in OCS, but not sure about that. At one point they wanted their cars so they could stash food and get a snack when they were allowed to go to their cars: but then when they were allowed to go to their cars, they were told NOT to eat anything. So, it didn't help all that much!

I still wonder what they can all take. Rachel showed me this huge list and yet when we looked online, it seemed that all they could show up with was a bag of underwear, socks and a bathing suit and some running shoes. How much did your son take with him. What do they end up storing in the cars?

My son Nick received a phone call yesterday from his new recruiter (apparently his former recruiter is no longer in that job). The new recruiter was talking to Nick about OCS and mentioned his start date of JANUARY 1, 2011. Nick told him that date was incorrect--that he was scheduled to begin OCS on JANUARY 30, 2011. The recruiter stated that his records indicate January 1. Nick explained that he is actually still in college, that he doesn't graduate until December 16 and that he is currently studying for and taking his finals. He leaves shortly after graduation for a cruise with his girlfriend which we bought for his college graduation gift. It is too late to cancel the trip and still receive a refund. He will get home in time for Christmas and will then move out of his apartment in Clemson, SC. He'll store some of his belongings at our home, and he will move most of his furniture to his girlfriend's apartment; however she doesn't have access to her new apartment until January 15.
Nick explained to the new recruiter that he is unable to make the January 1 start date work. The recruiter indicated he would check into the situation and get back with him. Nick is pretty worked up over the whole thing. Have you heard of this type of thing happening to anyone else? Thanks. Tina -

No, but I would pursue it. Does Nick have paperwork stating his start date? I think Rachel has a letter that actually states that date.

Nick went through all his paperwork and didn't find anything including his OCS reporting date. However, the recruiter told him verbally that it was January 30. I went with him to the recruiting office when he went in to sign some of his paperwork, and the person who helped him with that also stated the January 30 start date. Nick told me today that he has learned that OCS classes always start on a Sunday and that classes always start 3 weeks apart. He has communicated with some candidates who start on January 9, which is exactly 3 weeks before Nick's anticipated January 30 start date. I also read on a Navy web site that those in OCS classes at Christmas actually go home for Christmas and don't return until after New Years Day, so I have a hard time believing there would be a class starting on January 1. I'm thinking this new recruiter just might not have it all together yet! Nick is still waiting to hear back from him. I'll keep you posted!

Feeling for you. Praying for you as well. Have patience. It will all work out for the best in the end. I can't remember what you said; are you going with Nick to Newport? We are leaving for Newport on the Friday before. Randy is taking a day off (I am self employed). We will be leaving on Friday and returning Sunday when we finally kick Rachel out of the car sometime before noon. Rachel is on the FB page. She mentioned emailing Nick. Violet

Thanks for your prayers. I agree it will all work out. My husband Terry and I are not going to Newport with Nick. The Navy is flying him there from Columbia, SC. We will travel to Newport for graduation though.
If Nick has not replied to Rachel, please know that he's not being rude. I have heard very little from him lately with him finishing up his classes. He had one senior-level engineering class that was in itself just a big group engineering project. Most of the groups had 4 members; but a member of Nick's group dropped the class, and one other member did almost none of the work. It was up to Nick and one other guy to complete the project and they worked really hard to get it done. He's taking finals this week, and hopefully when they're complete, he'll be communicative again! -

I think you are right about the new recruiter not having his act together yet. Why would things change now all of a sudden?

Tina - Rachel came for a visit this weekend and we did a good chunk of her shopping (socks, t-shirts, running shoes, etc.) The car issue keeps coming up and now Rachel wants a car. She is telling us that the public transportation in Newport is not so good (as compared to NYC?) and she does not want to keep asking everyone for rides, especially once she gets into SWOS. She also likes the option of having a locker on wheels where she can keep her stuff. Given that they are going to OCS in the dead of winter, what did she think she would store there. She can't keep her cell phone or her laptop in the car in freezing weather. Her makeup will most likely freeze and thaw until it separates. She told me she wants to keep extra underwear and running shoes in there. I think she just wants a car. LOL. Well the not so funny part is that she has not driven two years and barely drove in the previous three.
Anyhow, is Nick getting ready? Rachel is forcing herself to get out of bed at 5:30, which is the hardest part for our night owl. -

Violet and Tina, good to hear you both talking about what is needed. My son, Jesse, I think has decided not to take his car. As a California boy, it is a long drive and he is not used to snow. Any words of wisdom about running gear or other clothing he needs is appreciated. If he takes his cell phone, what will they do with it?
