Here is what I have learned in the years of being a Navy Mom.....WAIT....WAIT....and Wait some more! As with anything that has to do with the government, we all WAIT. Then when the orders come through.....Sometimes we WAIT some more, other times....it's hurry, hurry, hurry. I know that isn't much help, but there are times when you hear that the orders are coming tomorrow and find out that tomorrow is a month away. It's just the way it is. Sorry, I wasn't much help, But I am sure you will get a lot of different answers. Only sure one is: when the orders are in your hands....THEN you know. I've been at this for nearly 17 years, one gets used to it.
You will not get orders until the last week of OCS and possibly not until the very last day. I know of one SNA who did not receive his orders until the afternoon THE DAY OF graduation. (And he was getting married that afternoon also!) This is not usual, but it can happen. As JJ posted...it is "hurry up and wait". My sons orders (NFO) actually changed on the Tuesday before graduation. We were all set for him to report to Pensacola before returning home to pack and move. On Tuesday morning, he received new orders to report to P-cola no later than 3 weeks after graduation. SO....a quick phone call to the airline and he was headed home with us to make the move. He handled all the paperwork for the PCS move before we left Newport. You will hear many rumors prior to graduation....just know that nothing is certain until the very end. Good luck! We are all here to support you...we've been through it before!
My LO's orders came at the last minute too. In our situation there was no spouse or children involved to worry about. Good luck and hang in there!
Good Morning,
My son received his orders on the day of Comissioning - and some of the OC's received them the Monday following. (obviously, some right before, as well, but not more than a few days) I know it's short notice...as stated before...it's just the way it is with the military. Base housing was not an option so it's always a good plan to look at the possible area you're moving to and check on-line for apartments/homes for rent - that's what he has done with his three moves - do your research before moving and you should have an idea of what is available.
Okay thank you ladies....that was what I was thinking, but dh said he would get his orders 2 weeks before grad which is one of those rumors like you said....I will definately start looking for places in Pensacola...I am just hoping and praying someway we get onto base housing we own our home in California (which we are renting out for a little more than half the mortgage) we just don't want to deal with taking care of two payments( I know we will get BAH for pensacola), but we will of course if we have too =)
