Hi Jn/Jf

We had our private commissioning last weekend … you are absolutely right! … it doesn't matter the dress, but the highlight of the event. My husband learned the marine corps summer dress blues regs had changed since he was on active duty, but was able to pull it together to meet the new dress code. I wouldn't have fit in any clothing so many years ago . But he did!

What a wonderful, memorable event it became. I am so awed and appreciative of the young men that made it so fabulous for all of us and to show such appreciation of all military members.

We are off to the next stage. We are hurriedly packing to see him off to Norfolk,VA. I am so proud of all of our young men and women.

miss deb -- my 92 year old father-in-law commissioned our daughter.  He wore a suit & his old sailor cap.  Everyone loved it!  Have seen several get commissioned by retired personnel in civilian suits with no covers, perfectly acceptable.

Helomom -- great reading about your son & his fabulous wife.  Cu-dos to both of them.

Thanks everyone for the well wishes for our officers!

M's mom, you are correct about the youngest - and i thank God about that every day.

The weather did hold out on the second day & solo was a success.

After a few hiccups (missed very tight connection at JFK & airline lost luggage) dd is settling in at the Navy lodge as i type.

Jn/Jf Mom: At least you still have the youngest home to mother for a few more years!

Anna:  Did your daughter get her wings?

Such mixed emotions... excitement, pride, sadness, feeling old, haha    The list goes on & on.

One Navy kid is now on her way to Sigonella Naval Air Station in Sicily

One Navy kid is soloing for Primary this week (if weather cooperates)

Youngest is off to Junior High

M's Mom - Thanks! He still flies to stay qualified for missions. Add to that his administrative duties. Last week he posted that he was 4 hours late getting home for his birthday dinner. His wife is a saint and the kids are used to it. That's just life with their dad.

Helomom:  Very impressed reading about your son!  You must be very proud.  He has certainly accomplished alot in his career so far. Will he no longer fly since he is now the CO and probably has lots of admin duties?       Love those military contractions: HELSEACOMBATRON

My father swore me in when I commissioned.  He wore a civilian suit.  He was 40yrs retired!  I would say any uniform that still fits would be appropriate!

Hi all
Does anyone have a retired military member commissioning their LO? Am wondering which military uniform may be appropriate??
Comment by jsefamily on August 10, 2015 at 11:57am

I think overall, attire is less important than your being there.  The attire information is a guide of what to expect and the idea.  We were given these same guidelines and saw all kinds of attire, especially at graduation.  Our son graduated in the fall and there was a chill in the air.  My husband had just landed a cold and was very sick.  So on top of his beautiful cashmere sweater and dress slacks, he wore a thick sweatshirt (all we had for a jacket) at the graduation.  He looked a fright but no one kicked him out.

I have one comment I'd like to share about graduation itself.  Our son was the first graduation that fall that wore the dress blues (actually black, and they are my favorite uniform). When the entire class walks/marches to their seats for the ceremony, it is a site to behold.  You can't help but swell with pride and feel the emotion, not as a parent, but as an American.  Wow.  I still see it in my mind's eye.
