Yea we know Meridian is boring, we are planning on driving somewhere else depending on how far I can go. I want to go to Mobile or Jackson but my family wants to go to New Orleans. I have been to New Orleans and did not like it so much. It will be nice being able to stay off base for the weekend as long as I dont have watch or anything like that. I wont still be in A School for the holidays, my family may just wait till I move and then come stay during the holidays.

Yea I have been on that website at least once a week since I DEPped 8 months ago lol. My son is almost 2 years old :) I will be gone for his birthday but it is just something I will have to get used to. No I will not being going to Officer school. I was 7 credits short of having a bachelor's :( I do have an Associate's degree so that has helped.

We have talked about it as a family and decided they should save the money for coming to see me in A School or maybe coming to see me during the holidays. They are not the type that would just show up and suprise me. I know PIR will be amazing! I can't wait :) This will be the first graduation I actually attend. I was not at my high school graduation or at my college graduation.

I feel well prepared for bootcamp, just hoping getting my wisdom teeth out the first week there doesn't set me back. I think the biggest thing I am worried about is how much time I have to move to my first duty station. I already started packing. I am worried I will have to be at the new base before I have time to move and my husband will be left to move our whole house and take care of our son. I am sure many other men would be capable to do this but my husband has never moved in his life. I mean he did move in with me but all he had to move was his clothing.

Thank you for responding so quickly. I will ask them about working there, even though it's such a far drive it would be worth it to have more time at home before moving.

I was not planning on taking anything at all with me to RTC. Is it true I can buy all those items like stationary, stamps and a phone card when I get there?

I'm not sure my family would come on here but I will tell them about it. No one will be coming to my PIR because the flights are so expensive. But I think they might drive out to see me during A School.

Hi! I hope it's ok I join your group. I am not a mother of someone in the navy but I am a mother and I am about to leave for boot camp in 17 days. After that I will be trained to be an AZ :) I was wondering how much time I would get off between school and my first station? I have a lot more questions but I will save those for after boot camp.

Ginny no worries, it is like anything in life, you get out of it , just what you put in. My daughter went through Boot , PIR in January she loved it. She said it was the best thing she ever did. She graduated Meridian on Thursday, and said yes it can be boring at times, but she was very involved with activities and has done great. She has made some very close friendship that will carry with her for a long time. She did very well in school and is graduating the top of her class. She is excited to get out in the fleet, however this Mom was nit happy that she picked to deploy right away on the Enterprise. Just one more step to get through. My daughter and her Recruiter and her RDC's in boot all believe that AZ's are respected in what they do. They work closely with a lot of officers, and my daughter is already talking about going back to school and by the time she re-enlists she wants to drop her officers package. Just encourage him to get involved and excel and what he does. Also tip for Boot from my daughter is know you DEP manual inside and out.

Hi all, haven't been on here for awhile.  Thanks for all the info on AZ.  As of now my son is still enlisting as an AZ.  He hasn't had the chance to fill out the paperwork to try to change to Intel but I have a feeling that won't come about anyway.  He'll be an AZ when he goes in.  He leaves May 29th for bootcamp.  I'm not too nervous yet, but once April comes around the nerves will start I'm sure.   Brian also wants to be able to see different ports, so I guess this is a good rate for that?  Can they bring their lap tops on the ship if they get deployed?  It's a shame that a sailor can be very good at what he does and he's not guaranteed re-enlistment if that is what he wants. I hope that changes in 4 years.  Thanks again for the info and I will be posting more especially as it gets closer to the date when Brian has to leave.  Have a great day everyone.

Well,my son was first going to be a culinary specialist. II think I said that already.  When he went to MEPS to sign his contract the job guy, not his recruiter, offered him this job as well.  He picked the AZ because he didn't want to cook and didn't want to be on a sub.  His recruiter didn't know he signed for AZ until Brian told him later on.  He's taking the job as of now, but the recruiter suggested to apply for the Intel job he wants because some of those jobs will be opening up.  He has to fill out something.  I'm not sure what the procedure is but he's going to the recruiter's office on Monday to do it.  All they can say is no and he'll take AZ and hopefully after 2 years he can cross rate.

I should listen to my husband and never look things up on the computer. But I looked up opinions of others regarding this rate and I keep coming up with that they are glorified paper pushers and the other members of aviation hate them cause they think they have a cushy job.  First of all I don't believe any job in the Navy is cushy.  I just want my son to be happy,  Does anyone know if the job is as boring as I'm reading from these people.  I don't know if they were ever AZ's or even in the Navy.  They might have sour grapes because they think the job is easy, which it does not sound that way.  Thanks.....just trying to get more info and understand the job more indepth......thanks.

My son, Brian, was just about to sign a contract for culinary specialist on a sub when they also offered this job to him at the last minute.  He decided to take this one.  I really do not know anything about it so I'm glad for this website.  Is this a good job to have in the Navy?  Can he have a good career if he decides to retire from the Navy?  Thanks...GinnyLa
