My son is currently at bootcamp, he was told by his recruiter and at MEPS that he could re-class at bootcamp. When he enlisted the job that he wanted was not open, he was encouraged to enlist as undesignated, so he did.  He learned on Monday that re-classing at bootcamp is not possible for the job he wants.I don`t understand how this works, my son scored in the 80`s on his ASVAB and has been scoring well at bootcamp, why don`t they allow them to choose a job?

HELP Please...

It seems the recrutier and MEPS lied to him...he signed a contract for undes..he is going to be undes.  He will get his orders to his first command while in bootcamp, after bootcamp he goes to a short school for 2-3 weeks..than is allowed to go home for leave..than off to his first command.  After he is on board his ship for 12 months he can request an "A" School.  Key word, request...there must be an opening in the USN for it and he must qualify for it.  Or when he is eligable for E4 he can request (key word again) to take a test...BUT not all jobs are open to just test for...and there must be an opening for the job in the USN.

They do NOT reclass in bootcamp...except less than 0.1% if for some reason there is a sudden opening in an "A" School (which right now doesn't happen as the USN is overmanned) or if for some reason the school someone signed up for they are no longer qualifed for.  But sence your son is undes...he will stay undes.

That makes sense I guess.. Thanks for answering my question..When you say on a ship does that mean a ship out at sea or a ship on-shore? I am getting lost with all this stuff.

I have another question, When your undes. Do you change jobs daily or do they assign you a job for the 12 month period. How do you know what you will be doing?

I am wondering how you will "request" an A-school.

I have heard that when you are undes you do crappy jobs, so I am wondering how you know what A school to request.

Is undes the same as PACT?

You explained it very well and yes he was lied to but maybe it will workout for the best...Sorry for all the questions I am just trying to understand so I can support my son and stay positive throughout this journey...

Ship as in those gray things that float on water :~}

Don't worry about how he requests the school...they will tell him at the command...they also let him know what he will qualify for and what is open to request.  There is a person at each command, that their sole job is to help the Sailors out (like an HR) they wear the badge like in my picture.

He will be assigned a work center to work in, but his job can and will change daily.

ALL jr people get the crappy jobs..doesn't matter if they are undes or have gone to an "A" School.  They all clean the heads (bathrooms), swab the decks (mop), paint, etc...

Do NOT apploigze for asking questions, you are learning...keep asking away.

Yeah I get the ship part. LOL

Thanks for your answers, you have been very helpful. Moms never stop worring about there children, I know he will be fine..

Thanks Again..

I feel your pain!!! My son was told the EXACT same thing!! I begged him to call me while at MEPS and NOT to accept ANYTHING without calling me or his dad first, DID HE LISTEN, NOOOO!!! I was so upset and SCARED when he told me he signed as UNDESIGNATED!! We were both told *After the fact* what a wonderful position he is in, how he can learn things from different rates, and this way gain real knowledge which will help him to more know what he WANTS to do, because he truly doesn't know what he wants, he thinks he does, we all did at 18. However, he was encouraged to choose a rate while in bootcamp, which I'm being told is simply not possible!!! This makes me sad, and I know he is truly disappointed as well.

I know recruiters lie all the time, and I truly find it very offensive that it is allowed!!!! They should remember how they felt in the beginning and make sure to be a true and honest mentor to the up and coming sailors!!! I also find it sad that the US Navy and other branches of our military allows their sailors/soldiers to be lied too!!! What a bitter taste it puts in their mouths....

Now, having said all that, I do believe that my son is right where he needs to be. I am a believer in God above and I know he loves my son and that he has placed him in the absolute best place for him. So I am desperately trying to remember that and let that keep me!!!!

The good Lord will guide us and ours... Mitch was told the same, later to find out the same into that you stated that he was not able to choose a Rate in basic.  He was an E3 going in so that helped.  He will try for a GM (Gunners Mate) in September.  He is looking forward to testing.  He stated that he did not know what he wanted to do and he didn't want to wait over a year to join so it was totally his choice and new that we were there to support him but wished we too were consulted before he signed on the line.  Looking at things now.. He is doing just fine and glad that he has had time to talk to others and look at other jobs as they stated and now knows that GM is what he wants todo... Wade will stay grounded and have a goal to look forward to and will see that all will be just fine.   Peace....

Cutepups, my son is undesignated as well, that was all that was open and he wasn't sure what he wanted to do anyway.  He is Div 145 and graduating same as yours.  He is PACT Seaman.  Thanks Angie for all the great information, as I have been confused about what this all means as well.

That is really cool I am not sure but I think my son is doing the same thing. He has excepted it and is ok with it now. He will just do what he needs to do and hope that when he is able he can get the job he wanted. I wish your son the very best...I have been hearing some positive things and I hope they are true.

Hello Everyone... Mitch too is one of the listed here.. He just graduated on May 18th.  As stated above will stay in GL for a few weeks and then come home.  He is currently an E3 and is hoping to apply to E4 and a GM within a short amount of time... We will have to wait and see how this all plays out..
