Hello , my name is Margie and I am a very proud yet very confused and worried Navy mom.... My son is also 09/338 PIR 10/07, I am still awaiting his phone call which from what I understand should be coming very soon : )  The reason for my confusion and worry is because this is his first time away from home and Im trying to understand what will be happening after PIR, My SR is enlisted as Undesignated PACT SEAMAN, I have heard good and bad things about going Undes. I have read his contract 100 times since hes been at RTC, Ive googled and read lots and lots about the program and am still confused, It shows his homeport as Japan, will he go to Japan right away after grad or will he have time at home before he leaves ? He scored 79 on ASVAB but chose Undes PACT SEAMAN because when it came time to choose a Rated job he was not sure what he wanted to do so the other option was Undes but it was not explained to him in detail what Undes actually meant, as I understand it he will be a deck hand, cleaning bathrooms ,peeling potatoes, chipping paint, painting etc and being treated like crap from the others who are rated. Can anyone help me understand this better ?

My son is in the PACT seaman program too--PIR in June--stayed in Great Lakes for a few weeks, home for 15 days, then he too flew to Japan, where he is at now.  His recruiter told him he could  strike for a job after 6 or so months and then go to school, but my son was told that he would "learn on the job" and would not be coming back to the states for school.  So, needless to say, tickets for him to get home from Japan run about $2000, so he won't be coming home any time soon.  He has been gone for a month, and was at sea most of it, but is back in Sasabo right now and seems to be home sick...gonna be a rough ride.  Where is your son headed and to what ship?

Im really not sure that is why I posted the above ! Hang in there , I know that has to be tough. Did his contract read Homeport Japan ?
Margie, check out the group "Undesignated, What's up with That?"  There is a wealth of information on that site and you will get the answers to all (or most) of your questions, as well as find a support group to laugh, cry, and commiserate with you.  Sounds as if your son is still in Boot Camp?  It is a tough time for moms & sailors.  The lack of communication, the acronyms and letters that get thrown around mean nothing to us.  We are nearly two years past PIR, and here is my advice:  1.  Get used to "hurry up and wait."  Patience is NOT my long suit, but you will need plenty of it.  2.  Be prepared for a roller coaster ride.  You will need to be your son's cheerleader when he is down, so vent your frustrations with your fellow Navy moms, not with him.  Finally, yes, he will probably be doing all of the above, but he will be learning, forming new relationships, and growing as a man.  My son went from Undes to Petty Officer within a year, so this, too shall pass.
umm  this is under that group

My husband is also UNDES and will graduated BC on 9/16. He should find out, before PIR, where his first duty station is. I have a quick question that one of you may know ... if he is stationed overseas does his wife go with him? He is E3 (not sure if that matters). He told me that he can test for E4 in March and strike a rating (unless he is on deployment) ... what is the general schedule for the first 6 months after PIR for someone undesignated?

Thanks for any answers or advice.
