One reason I like Battleship because of the humor and unabashed sentimental attitude.  Without being a "spoiler," I will say that I got a little choked up when the scene that brought the some of the biggest whoops and clapping was when the old sailors came into it - sweet!

Patrick's Mom, I too watched Act of Valor with my son - we had both been anticipating it, especially since last year he'd shared with me the SWCC video on Youtube and I really admired its production values.  I agree that it was good, but wish the SEALs had better writing; it's tough for non-actors to act well.  I also thought that it might have been better if the movie's first and second half plot lines had been swapped, with the woman's rescue at the end - more emotional.

Marcy, thanks for the review of Battleship.  I think it sounds like one my husband would like, but like you, I'm not much for adventure movies either.  I think this is one we'll go to however.  If you see a couple of reviews back, I went to see Act of Valor with my son, and although tough to watch at times, was very good.

Battleship - go see it!  I'm usually not one for adventure-type movies - just saw Avengers, couldn't wait for it to end - but this one's different.  It has humor, thrills, suspense, patriotism, romance, and is quite a roller coaster ride with a very human touch.  I got to see it at a sneak preview for Navy families at Naval Amphibious Base Little Creek, and the director, Peter Berg himself came and spoke before the movie - what a nice, down to earth guy - his dad was Navy, too :)   The experience of viewing it with Navy people was just amazing - lots of clapping as you'd expect at the right moments, but the pride too was really great to experience.  I think you'll have a good time watching this one.

@Patrick's mom - Sometimes I go by myself too (took me years to do so, silly of me) and "The Lucky One" sounds like a good choice for it, think I will too.

My husband was out of town last week so I went to see "The Lucky One" by myself.  Wonderful movie if you're like me and love "love stories".  Very sweet.

A few weeks ago when I was in Great Lakes with my son after his graduation from boot camp, we went to see "Act of Valor" starring real life Navy Seals.  It isn't a movie that I would normally go to see, but it was so perfectly appropriate with Patrick just finishing boot.  It contained violence, but also a very strong message of what it means to be part of a Navy team.  My son really liked it, and I too have to give it a thumbs up for the storyline.  It really was very good.

I don't get to the movies much lately, so it may be awhile.

I don't like it when the language takes away from the story.

Hi Carol.  I've heard from others that liked it, (including two women from my parents church who are in their 80's!).  I'm totally perplexed by this, but movies are so subjective.  What one finds to be excellent, another may find totally the opposite.  If you decide to see it, I'd be curious to know what you think.

I was looking at The Descendants, so I appreciate your view, Patrick's Mom.
