I thought I would start this discussion for ideas for families heading to Corpus for events since I am in the throes of heading down there.

I just found out that there is something called Navy Lodge, which apparently is at many bases.  Families can stay in hotel-like rooms very inexpensively.  The rooms at the Corpus Navy Lodge are $63/night.

We were going to stay at Embassy Suites, but after reading many reviews switched to the Hilton Garden Inn.

We had a lot of fun in Corpus - very hectic week in that my son received his orders and had to move out of his house in addtion to all the winging stuff and family being there.

The Hilton Garden Inn is very nice and would highly recommend it. It's only about 15 minutes from the base, so easy access. My dad stayed at the La Quinta which was a couple of block from the Hilton - he said it was comfortable.

We hit a couple of three good restaurants near Padre Island and the base; Doc's, Dragonfly and Black Sheep Bistro - Doc's was okay, typical seafood fare (not upscale). The other two were both very small, but very good food!

I was struck by the economy in Corpus near the base, the downtown area is very nice. We went to the USS Lexington and then had dinner at the Republic of Texas restaurant at the Omni hotel - it was wonderful - on the 20th floor and there was a full moon and the views were to die for!

People drive like maniacs down there - if you weren't going 75, you weren't going fast enough. The freeway runs through the middle of town and has access roads on either side - so you need to figure out how to get on and off to get to a particular location.

We flew into San Antonio and drove to Corpus - so we spend 2 days there once we left CC. That's a great city if you've never been there - the riverwalk cruise is fun and very informative - but DO NOT EAT at the Iron Cactus restaurant!

On to Jacksonville!
Thanks for this info I am hoping my son will be in CC in about 7 or 8 weeks for Primary. As for the local drivers - they sound slow. Have you ever driven around Baltimore/Naval Academy? They speed at around 90 and anything slower is standing still! lol! Yes San Antonio is beautiful. We were there in1992. Where is the Iron Cactus?
Have never been to Baltimore - that's crazy! We actually saw a kid on a motorcycle blazing on the freeway doing a wheelie for about a mile - absolutely ridculous).

The Iron Cactus is in San Antonion on the Riverwalk, (sorry, should have been more specific - it's not in CC).
