mswanda there is a page on here called Molly's adopt a sailor. They also have a fb page if you have fb.
http://www.navyformoms.com/group/mollysadoptasailorproject
here is a link to the page on here. You can do all kinds of things to help out. Some make cards, some sew, some get donations, etc. There was a packing party in Tampa last month and I got to go. It was lots of fun.
When we went to our middle son's PIR we drove from Jax. But it did take us 2 days. If we had found a cheap flight we would have flown.
@snowskiier I also flew from Orlando to Midway but with Southwest cheap and free bags...I think it would be easier if you found cheap tix to Milwaukee WI is about 45 min to an hour drive to GL but you will not be caught in traffic. We drove to Milwaukee and it was a smooth drive but driving thru Chicago towards GL and back was not easy lots of traffic!!!
Thanks navymom3
I've had the opportunity to see how my son has changed since BC. He had always been a good boy but his last year in high school was very stressful since he was involved with the wrong crowd...kids that had nothing planned for their future. We were presurring him to go to college willing to help him but at the end he just said he was not interested in college and didnt want us to waste our money in it...he had always been in ROTC and thats when we started the navy journey since he had started to apply for scholarship with them but was too late for that at the moment. Im thankful he didnt stay here and is actually persuing his dreams.
And you got that right my sons are so different!!!
My middle son will be graduating high school in the top 20. He is already in the DEP for Nuke...he scored a 95. He tried getting the scholarship but well he didnt so now he will head to BC in August.
There's not a day when I just see them as babies and what they have become and say it was so worth it...
Thanks for your words. We are very new to all of this none of us have had close family in the military and have had to work so hard I really wanted them to have something they love to do and that are well compensated for. I will defintively look into joining some kind of voluntary program. Where do I find info?
Thanks again!
its not quite south, but I got round trip from Orlando to midway for $159 on air Tran..
Good morning everyone! Might any south Florida moms have suggestions about flights to GL?
mswanda I see the things the Navy has done to help my son's have a very productive and fullfilled life and that helps. My oldest tried college for 2 quarters and we just ended up with a huge bill. We both never went to school or the military so wanted more for our boys. The middle son barely graduated high school. We moved to Hawaii his senior year and luckily they had a program for him to get caught up on missing credits. It wasn't that he was dumb just bored. He graduated for both his a and c school at the top of his class. When asked why he couldn't do that in high school he said "they weren't paying me" LOL. They both love there jobs and they are both different.
I also volunteer for Molly's adopt a sailor program and sew pillowcases for deployed soldiers. Right now I have 60 make ones ready to ship to this months ship. There is all kinds of things you can do with them.
I also have one more son at home. He is a freshman in high school. And right now we are sharing a house with my oldest sailor. He is at NAS JAX but trying to get a temp assignment in Japan for 6 months.
My middle sailor has only been in Japan since January 5th. I don't expect to see him in person for at least a year. He is loving it there. Just can't wait until he can move out of the barracks. But you have to be e5 to live off base in Japan. Thanks goodness for free text and calling apps on our phones and skype. We will skype when he gets back to Yokosuka as he is out floating around right now. We haven't yet cause I don't trust myself to not start crying. And I don't want him to see that and feel bad. He can't see tears when we text. He will be there at lest 3 years. We encouraged him to go so he can see the world likes he wants to. Even though it is hard to have him gone.
We currently share a house with my oldest sailor. We moved here with him since we had both lost our jobs. We lived in Hawaii when he had to choose duty stations and tried to Hawaii. He wanted to live by us again. So I told if not Hawaii it needed to be somewhere warm so here we are in Florida. Been here a year in february. It is nice so far.
Hi snowskiier--I have booked rooms at the Navy Lodge, also. It will be so good to reconnect once our SRs graduate BC. Looking forward to seeing you again! It just won't get here soon enough!
Hi navymom3---You sound like a seasoned Navy mom. How often do you get to see them when they are overseas? That will be the hard part for me....when they are that far from home. At least you have one close by in Jax.
No problem. I wish there was something like this when my oldest went to BC. He has been in for over 6 years now and on his 2nd duty station. Here at NAS JAX. My middle son has been in for a little over a year and is in Japan now. Time goes by so fast once they get threw BC.
