Hi Jean, I love to quilt too, welcome to the group.  My son will be getting out of the Navy in February, so he will be a Navy Veteran.  I am still learning alot, I have made a few quilts, just takes me a while to get them done.  Hope we can become friends.  Trouble on Fire.

Hi Jean,

Nice to meet you!  I'm not an expert quilter either, but I do enjoy the process and the learning curve that goes with it.  I remember about 5 years ago, I said I would NEVER be a quilter because it took too long to see any result.  Welllllll....never is a long time, and I've come to enjoy it immensley!

I'm glad you found Navy for Moms.  There is a wealth of information here, as well as more moral support than you can imagine.  We are a Navy family.  My FIL was a career Navy man - started enlisted and retired as a Lt.Cdr.  Hubby is also a retire Naval officer.  My dad was in the Navy when he was young. So, needless to say, when our sailor enlisted we were pleased.  He is an Operations Specialist - 3rd class, has been in 19 months, is married, has a 7 month old baby boy and loves his life!!!

Get ready for the roller coaster...it's quite a ride!

Post some pictures of your quilts!

Hi, my name is Judy and my son is on the dep and will be leaving in March 2013.  He will graduate college in December.  I want to make him a quilt while he is at bc, I will be making a Northern Star Quilt with Navy Material that I found at Hobby Lobby.  I want to put a blessing or a motto or something on the back of it.  Does anyone have any ideas what would be appropriate or right for the back of his U.S. Navy Quilt.  Thanks for any and all suggestions.

Judy

Hi Judy and welcome!!!

Firstly, if you want your son to be able to take it aboard ship with him it must be 100% cotton, from fabric to batting to thread.  It is for fire reasons.  As we know, polyester melts and sticks to the skin when exposed to fire. As to what to put on the back...perhaps a scripture verse or reference OR the Navy's phrase for "good luck" which is "Fair winds and following seas"  Lastly...it would be a good idea to machine embroider or otherwise permanently put his name on it somewhere.  Sadly, these things have a way of growing legs sometimes and his name on it without possibility of being removed without damage to the quilt is a good idea.

Thanks Kathy for the information. I didn't know all of that and love the quote, I will probably embroider this on one of the sashings.
