Hello, I am Brian's Mom! He arrived at GL 8/3 and will be going to be a corpsman. I have been a nurse for 30 years and just retired as a Director of Surgical Services. My husband is stationed here in Puerto Rico so I am Volunteering as a RN in the Clinic here helping with HEDIS and helping them prepare for Joint Commission.

To all Navy Nurse Moms: MAS has jumped to #27 (see comment below). Please take the time to vote. Just think how many boxes will be shipped to our sailors with $50K ...!!! Do you know the sorts of "causes" ahead of us? A thriller movie festival, for one! Can't remember the others now, but this is the only project for our troops. So please vote and get your family & friends involved too. And, no, I have no shame in asking for anything for our military (items on wish lists or votes). It isn't hard - we just need to take a minute or 2 and do it. (Now I sound like Nike.) I just finished voting and so did my husband and son. Thanks for helping. This is such an easy way to help our "children" in the Navy.

Just wanted to ask all you navy nurse moms if you would take a minute and go to the Pepsi Refresh Everything site and vote for Molly's Adopt a Sailor (MAS). Even if you haven't joined this group, MAS could use the help. They are in the running for a donation of $50,000 which will ship a LOT of packages to our sailors. Currently they are 31st on the list, but they have to get into the top 10. You are allowed to vote once a day everyday. Will you please try to help and forward the link to everyone you know? Let's try to get MAS that $50K. Here's the website (hope it comes through as a link): http://www.refresheverything.com/mollysadoptasailor
Thanks everybody!!

I'm back from Boston & my parents' home, finally. It is 6:10p EST. The news isn't good. The tumor has grown substantially larger and that is with the gensyme (sp?) which is the first line of chemo for pancreatic ca. They can give him 2nd line chemo but it has such a poor track record it would have to be combined with a second chemo agent & the side effects are horrific. Radiation is out. The docs told us that this 2nd line would add only weeks or a couple short months to his life and make him very ill. He has decided to stop all treatments effective today. Right now he isn't showing a lot of symptoms which is good. They will treat the symptoms as they arise. They are going to set him up for the Bridge to Hospice so everything will be in place when it is needed. I talked to the doc privately and asked her to please put things in place so I can be his daughter - not his nurse - which she agreed to do. They will only rely on me for a nursing assessment in an emergency which is fine by me. I'm sad and a little angry, but mostly just numb & sort of a deflated balloon. Do you think that is normal? The docs give him 6-12 mos., but I know they really have no idea. No one does. "A man's days are ordered by the Lord God" so I'm not thinking in that timeline, because I believe only God knows. My Mom took it fairly well. We are hoping to get her feeling better and stronger so that they can take off and do things and enjoy however many days they have left together. They would dearly love to go to NY to see Matthew and Amanda, so we will likely work on that first. It isn't too long a drive - 3 to 3 and 1/2 hours with stops which will be needed for Dad. I really can't think anymore, my brain is as numb as my body. Thank you for your prayers and encouragement, I'd never have gotten thru this day without you all.

Well, I'm off to Beth Israel Medical Center (in Boston). We are all a bit nervous. I think anticipation is the worst thing for patients and their families to go thru. Being on the nurse side was a little easier, but now I've experienced both. Only calm person is my Dad!! I'll talk to you all this afternoon when I get back. It'll likely be 3:30p EST or later because of the traffic. Gotta run. Thank you for your prayers, I'll carry them in my heart as we go. Love you all.

Almost forgot - I'll let you all know what happens tomorrow. Good and/or bad. Talk to you all later.
