Last week was tough, but I am praying for a better one this week. Last Monday my Dad had another CT scan to see what is going on with the tumor. The last CT scan (about a month ago) showed the tumor had grown and was now pressing against his diaphragm (sp?). The doc said if nothing had improved he would be ineligible for radiation - too great a danger of burning the diaphragm. Tomorrow he has session #2 of 3 and this is his 3rd cycle of chemo. If the radiation is out, I don't know if they will continue the chemo or not. The not knowing makes me a little anxious, but I'm trying very, very hard to leave everything about this with God and just trust Him for the outcome. That really is the only thing to do. Thanks NurseNavy for your messages and thank you all for your encouragement and prayers.

Thanks everyone for your suggestions and words of comfort. You all touched my heart and soul deeply. I will never be able to tell you how much peace and comfort I felt after reading your notes. Thank you Dona, Nurse Navy Mom, Chris and Rose for taking the time to reach out to a hurting fellow nurse and Navy Mom. It is true, this is like a big family with everyone supporting each other through whatever life throws at us.

NYPDMom-I am sorry I have no advice for you. I will keep you and your family in my prayers. My dad was in the hospital where my brother was doing his surgery residency. He went into cardiac arrest while my Mom was there-she is a nurse, too. My brother happened to be getting off the elevator when his pager went off to our Dad's room. This was totally unexpected so you can imagine the feeling that came over him. I live about 200 miles away and was at home. They did get a response after 30 mins. of CPR, but then he was on life support for a week. There was no advance directive in writing, but we knew his wishes. My Mom was afraid to maake a decision thinking we would blame her, my brother was afraid my other brother and me would blame him because he was a Dr. there and made the decision to keep defibrillating him. Of course, we didn't blame anyone. God took care of the decision about a week after the arrest-he stopped breathing on the vent. It is tough when there is so much family involved and everyone has their own opinions and what should be done. I can understand your frustrationand anxiety. I pray things will improve there.

Thank you everyone for your encouragement and prayers. It has been an especially difficult time as I have found my siblings making med errors - and you must know how that sits with a nurse! The problem is they all stick together (6 of them) and tell me lighten up. Long talk with a doctor last night, but the plan didn't work. Tomorrow I have an appt. with my PCP who is also my parents, I'm hoping to make him see why I'm so upset so often. I've become so anxious bout this that I'm vomiting every morning just from worry and anxiety about what the day is going to bring to me. I've tried and tried to leave it in God's hands, but it makes me crazy thinking about them giving my Daddy his pills. Any advice from other daughters/nurses or anyone else for that matter? I can't keep going like this. Thanks friends for ALL your love, prayers, concern and support. Always, donna

Just an update - my Dad is still hanging in there, it was CindyH's dad who recently passed away. My dad was hospitalized last week for dehydration and increased pain - actually new pain in the right flank area. His tumor has grown and is pressing on his diaphragm making it harder to breathe. He is also very, very week. He told me this past week that he feels he is entering his final 1/3 of the trip home to heaven and then gave me a special message to always remember. (I cried for days, I am missing him so already.) I do believe that patients can often sense when their time is limited. The docs at Beth Israel in Boston have been great, but they only gave him 6-12 mos when 1st assessed and it is just 6 mos. now. Thank you all for your continued prayers for my Dad, me and my family. They mean more than I can tell you. We are very thankful that Matthew's 2nd deployment has been delayed. I would hate for him to be gone when his Grampa dies, although I imagine many other g'sons and g'daughters have had to grieve alone with the Navy mates. Still it is nice to know he is only as far as CT and NY. Thank you all again. Love, Donna

CindyH, I'm so sorry to hear about your Dad's passing. What a shock to you and your family it must have been. Complications from a fall are a serious issue for the older population. Thank you for praying for my Dad, it really means a lot to me. I'll be praying for you as you and your family adjust to a different life.
Dawni and Pat - The same prayer will be for you two as well.

Hello fellow nurses. I have 2 sons in the Navy and both are getting orders about a month apart. You know how us nurses like to be in charge and take control. Well the Navy is a whole other animal. Sitting on the sidelines is a challenge. I am from Pennsylvania and just left ICU for administration. I am thrilled to be a member of this group. Have a good day.

thank you, NurseNavyMom--I am a member of the NROTC group, and love it--but I just thought there must be a group for just the nursing kids as well. I'll keep looking, but thank you
