My son really loves the experience he is having and would love to change is status to active. He has asked about this but does anyone have any advice that can confirm the proper procedures? How long can he expect to wait or anything he should be doing while in A school? Thank you!

This is the BUPERS website he will need to look at to figure it out  - http://www.public.navy.mil/BUPERS-NPC/CAREER/RESERVEPERSONNELMGMT/E...

The process can take any where from a few weeks to a few months and really depends on whether the Navy needs people in his rate with his amount of service.  He should talk to his command career counselor, and they should know what to do.

Two years ago my son was told to wait until he arrived at his Reservist Duty Station to try to sign a different contract and go AD.  At the Reserves, he was assigned to a career counselor type individual who kept him updated on what rates were open.  At times, he could have signed up as a cook or other rates he had no interest in (trust me, for the good of all our sailors--we did not want him to cook!)  He was notified one time of an opening in his rate, but it was gone instantly taken by someone else who was luckier or had a more responsive career counselor.  He signed a new contract last August for a rate that is close...but not exactly what he wanted to do.  Counsel him to be patient and not sign for something he wouldn't want to be stuck in for 2 to 4 to 6 years.  There's no guarantee there will be an opening in their desired rate after their first 2 years, so it is best to find one they'll be happy in even if it takes some time.  Good luck to you and your sailor!!!
