MichelleA- we are from Cali and moved here about a year ago. Many of the areas in and around Portsmouth are very hit or miss. One street can be very nice and safe and the next block is not. My suggestion... find somewhere decently priced that has a 6 month lease option. Move here and then go exploring and find what is right for your family

We live in Stanley Court Military housing. Right now they are offering a 6 month lease for $895/month plus electric, water, gas and trash are included. This is for the 2 bedroom 1 bath townhomes. Before we moved here people talked down on the area, but its really not bad at all. If I feel comfortable enough to take my infant son for walks during the day by myself it can't be that bad.

We have been driving around a lot looking at the different areas because we are thinking about buying a house and the churchland area of portsmouth is the same. Very hit or miss in my opinion. If your husband is being stationed at the Naval Hospital you should also look in North Suffolk. The drive is a little further than Churchland, but only by a few minutes.

Let me know if you have any more questions. Like I said we have been here for a year and get out and explore a lot. So I think I have a good feel for the area. I also am part of a Moms Club and a lot of those girls are Military spouses as well (Coast guard, Navy and Army). I may be able to get an answer from them. Most of them have lived in this area longer than me.

My son lived at The Myrtles for about four years, and I visited a few times :)   Don't know much about the Churchland area.  If you're looking at apartments vs single family homes, I still like the Myrtles - plus you can sleep later LOL

Fabulous :) thank you! So I'm assuming you have live or previously lived there? I was also looking at apartments in the churchland area. Heard anything about that area? Haha maybe I should just message u. :) lol

ps a lot of Navy people live at The Myrtles, Coast Guard too.  You can also lease optional single car garage space.

Olde Towne Portsmouth, which is just outside the hospital and between Effingham Street and the Elizabeth River is considered a good area, and the homes are historic and lovely (even a cobblestone street!).  The Myrtles is probably the safest place in fact because it is beside the guarded front entry to the hospital with all the security :)  When I was visiting there I asked a cop his opinion and he laughed and said "we call it the Green Zone," so I was reassured.  You can walk a few minutes to a great restaurant in the marina with fantastic views, or over to High Street for restaurants, coffee, even the landing for the $1.50 ferry to Norfolk's Waterside and walk up to the MacArthur Mall (Nordstom, H&M, movie theater etc etc).

Marcy! Thank you so much! I just now saw your comment! I really appreciate it :) I heard the area around the base is not so safe?? This place looks really nice though! :)
