My husband, son and I just pcs'd from WA to Portsmouth. I'm wondering what the best facebook page is for Navy wives in the area. Thanks!

We live in the New Gosport navy housing here in Portsmouth and really love it here but you have to have 2+ kids t live here or at least the 2nd on the way I think! I feel very safe here but not anywhere else really here in portsmouth to tell you the truth! There are a lot of strip club around here and homeless people asking for money all the time and we have heard a lot of gun shots too! I've heard there are lots of gangs around here and drug houses but I'm not looking or driving around here much! I do feel safe to walk around our neighborhood though and we have a nice big park for the kids here too! If you can get into the housing here I would!
thanks marcy :). no kiddies yet so at least dont have to worry about that lol
If you're working in Portsmouth and thinking of living elsewhere (Norfolk, Virginia Beach, Chesapeake etc) - or vice versa - be aware that there are tunnels and bridges, including drawbridges, that get jammed at peak-traffic times and can make you crazy - and late :(
If you have children, schools in Portsmouth and Norfolk aren't considered tops and cause many to look elsewhere, like Chesapeake and Virginia Beach.
Norfolk has some great areas, like the Ghent neighborhood between the base and Old Dominion University - great dining, the MacArthur Mall, and so on. However, Norfolk is known more for its unsafe areas, so be mindful of that.
All in all you guys are moving to a great area, lucky you! It's beautiful, water everywhere, the weather's nice, and there is so much to do - sports, beaches, museums, tons of colleges and universities, music, summer festivals. The MWR at Little Creek rents campers and kayaks for very little; and the Little Creek and Oceana bases have their own beaches, nice and private, plus Oceana has cottages by the beach you can rent.
You're about a three hour or so drive north to Washington DC (or take the Amtrak train to DC, NY, Boston!); and to the south, drive to North Carolina's Outer Banks and white sand beaches. Dailean, if your daughter has read the classic Misty of Chincoteague, you can drive a little ways north to the island and see the wild ponies there - Misty's descendants :)
ever heard of pepperwood?
The Olde Towne section by Naval Medical Center Portsmouth is really nice and considered safe :) - Beautiful Victorian-style row houses, walk to shops and restaurants on High Street, $1.50 ferry to Norfolk's Waterside. "The Myrtles at Olde Towne" luxury apartments (the three-story brick-and-white complex, NOT the related 8-story hi-rise of same name across the street) are next to NMCP, super nice, beautiful clubhouse, amenities, pool, garage available for extra, they take pets too. http://www.apartmentguide.com/apartments/Virginia/Portsmouth/The-My...
hi ladies, moving to portsmouth in a year, anyone have any words of advice??
Hello Ladies My husband, Daughter and I will be moving to Portsmouth Va In july we currently live in Jacksonville fl . Can anyone tell me what its like there.??
Hello All,
I am planning to relocate to the Virginia Beach/Norfolk/Chesapeake area this coming summer. I am trying to get all of my ducks in a row. I will greatly GREATLY appreicate any insight on neighborhoods, schools, traffic, and activities for a 9 year old boy. We will be relocating to be with my sailor who is stationed in Norfolk.
I am also going to be seeking employment. I currently work in HR as a Specialist I have 5 years experience and a Masters in Public Administration. I know that it's WHO you know these days and will GREALTY appreciate being sent in the right direction in the area as well.
Hi Teach! Don't have an answer for you, but suggest you come join this group too: http://www.navyformoms.com/group/norfolksailorsfamilyfriends.
