Joyce...I'm so sorry that Chris's leave was denied. That's terrible. Any specific reason? I'm sure you're very happy that you still have one left at home. LOL. It's certainly a rough road. What does make it harder is that traveling is so expensive. Knowing that they are so close but yet so far.

NitaSewBee - thank you for sharing and the advice.

Hi everyone, haven't been on here for awhile, mostly been lurking in the JApan group as that's where my son was for awhile earler this year. Right now  he is in NJ  waiting to  start his job as a recruiter. I remember when he left for Boot camp. I didn't  have the PIR group as N4M's wasn't  in existence yet. My son PI'd 10/21/06. When he left for boot camp, we were with him at the swearing in place,  he  originally was in a buddy program  but at the last minute he had to change  everything as his friend didn't make weight.. He had the option to go on alone  or wait a few more weeks. He  choose to go on with out his buddy so he could get the   job he wanted.. That was 5 yrs ago.  We were able to see him at the airport before he left.. unfortunately  i had to leave before he left. He left from Albany  airport as we are from Schenectady. His  Pir was awesome. I took the train from  Schdy to   Chicago Illinois.. It was a  15 hr + trip. My hubby,  youngest son and older son's g/f now wife flew out the next morning. They picked me up from the train station. We stayed at the NAvy  Lodge.

Its great that you have the  pir group all set up. I wish I had  that.. it would have been nice to  have  some support while RJ was in Boot camp. But Now I belong  to  27 groups, all revolving around crafts, and some  of the states where my cyber friends live, states where I  visit from time to time and the  state where my son  is now stationed, as well as the  Japan group.  You will meet  alot  of moms on this site. There aren't alot  of  moms where I live.. so I "hang " out with my  " fellow cyber Moms" I  hope you are  doing well Boot camp  is an exctitng time.. much harder for us than them.. they are too busy to  have time to  be sad.. but I bet  they wish  we could be there to share their accomplishments.. That's why letter writing  is so important. I used to have the letters  my son sent me from boot camp but they got lost when my  youngest son and my seabee's wife decided to clean  house for us. But that's  a whole  new chapter.

Any how. write lots  of letters, tell them about  your day. This is especially important whe they finish their schooling and get deployed into parts unknown. And when they  get stationed somewhere,  join the group for the location  or ship they  on. I could go on.. but I think you get the ideas.

Well I hope everyone has a great day... take care

If you are looking for things to occupy yourselfwith and you happen to sew, we have  a great "Pillowcase" group where we send pillowcases to the troops. or there is" Molly's Adopt a sailor "where we adopt  a ship as  a group and send pakgs to them.  that group also makes pillowcases as well.. In fact we just won a grant to  purchase material to make  pillowcases for our "Special Hugs" project. Anyhow there's alot  of  groups , there  is probably one that meets  your interests.

Angie, it's great that you  keep up with  some of the mom's in  the PIR group. I  hope you enjoy your trip...

hi invisible: glad things are progressing for your sailor. Chris was supposed to come home for a week mid october but his leave was denied. Im very dissapointed but will get over. With him gone and #2 away at college for the first time its a little harder to take. Luckily I have 1 more at home. He is a junior in HS so no empty next yet. Hopefully chris will come home in March. He said no christmas this year which will be the first time ever. Im thinking of going to norfolk for a few days at that time but its a long drive and expensive and dont have much time off.  Will see what happens. I have parent weekend in Albany in 2 weeks so will get  an extra kid fix then.

Just wanted to stop by and say hi....We've been dormant here for a while.  I got the box, the form letter and then A CALL !!!!  He needed some info for security clearance but we got to speak for about 10 mins.  He sounded wonderful.  Perfectly normal.  The only thing he said is that the RDCs yell louder than me....LOL.

I'm booking my flight today for PIR and then the hotel.  Today is day 14 that he's gone and it seems like a lifetime.

Have a great day all and I hope everyone is getting their letters and calls and that things are all good.

Hi Joyce, I'm twenty steps ahead......LOL.  I already started the PIR group for 11/10/11.  I couldn't just sit around and wait.  I'm actually going out of my mind.  I'm missing my son terribly.  I haven't gotten the box or form letter yet but I've already got letters ready to mail.  His recruiter called me on Monday and gave me his address yesterday and I've been a busy little beaver ever since.  I hadn't cried for 3 days after he left.  Then the flood gates opened.  I'm really trying to keep myself busy.  Thank you so much for thinking of me.  Fresh Meadows - right around the corner....Howard Beach!

hi invisible: well by now your son is being broken in at boot camp. how are you surviving this first week? I live in the fresh meadows area. try to get on a boot camp site there is alot of information. Also once you know his division there will be a site for that as well. There you can talk to moms who have sailor recruits in the same group. If you can, try to plan to attend graduation. It is a really great experience

Thank you Joyce.  Your Sailor sounds like a very considerate young man not wanting to call you that late.  I'm going to be at MEPS tomorrow at 9am.  I spoke to my son a few times tonight while he was at the hotel. Already made a couple of friends.  What part of Queens are you?  I grew up in Howard Beach.

good luck invisible: when chris went he also went to a hotel the night before didnt get much sleep. the next morn he went to Ft. Hamilton and we met him there at 9am (we live in queens) we waited around for almost 2 hrs for the swearing in (didnt really spend much time with him during that period) then he sat with us after swearing in for a short time and we left aroun noon. He had a 3pm flight which was delayed and finally arrived in gl aroun midnight he took his cell so he had it in airport and called me when the plane landed in gl. He did not call me for the ive arrived phone call from boot camp because he new it would be the middle of the night Good Luck to your sailor

There was alot of waiting the morning of swearing in at ft Hamilton last July my son just PIR'ed on 9/9. All the famies left when the SR were called into a briefing after the swearing in. It seemed like the right moment to go. The SR should take the cell phone so that it can be used throughout the trip and for the I am here call. We also had dinner in the hotel restaurant the night before swearing in. It will be ok invisible 12!
