My son said there was a possibility that a family member could travel on the aircraft carrier from Hawaii to California (at the end of deployment). He didn't know if this opportunity was limited to…Continue

Kris P: Congrats to Mitch! That is really awesome. Conor worked his tail off for the two months at Fallon, but it was a great experience. He did the July start last year and finished in mid-September.
So nice to know where your DS and DIL will be going. We won't have a clue for several months as to where DS will be after Japan. He's hoping for one of the coasts - hated Fallon because there is nothing around. His class went to Reno a few times, but that got old fast. He was kidding that if he ends up back in Fallon, he is going to buy a condo in Tahoe!
Atsugi was completely shut down for 2 days because they got 8" of snow. My son thought it was pretty funny because to us Midwesterners that is barely even a reason for a school snow day. I have to say, though, I am really tired of these sub-zero temps.
Kris ,my son was in China Lake a few years ago also in VS9. He was writing the training manual for the Growler. He liked it there, even though it was far from things.the idea of the desert appealed to me,but we lived in NY at the time and sadly never made it there.now we are in Whidbey Island WA and plan to drive there just to see it
I hope you all had a lovely holiday. Ours was small, but nice. DS called last night and was thrilled to be back in Japan. The GW was working all hours to get the relief out to the Filipinos. I'm so very proud of all of them! It sounded grueling - flying 6 AM to 4 PM (with breaks of course), day after day. Due to his Top Gun stint, this is the first time that he has seen his apartment in six months.
Sheila: Prayers for your DS' first deployment. The first is the hardest on us, because it is so much harder for them to call. That's probably why I send so many packages and postcards - it's my way of keeping in touch. I know I and others have said it multiple times, but magazines are great on board. My DS said the last package he got had the first new magazines they had in the ready room in over a month. I even have friends saving theirs to ship over.
Kris P: Have a fantastic Christmas in Scotland! How many years has it been since you have had all 3 of your sons together for a holiday? Enjoy those grandsons, too.
It is the end of the semester here at school, so I'll probably not be posting, but keep the notes coming. It's great to have other moms who understand. Hugs to all.
Kris P: Welcome back! Your trip sounds amazing. I've never been past Turkey in that area of the world.
Even better news is that #1 son is on his way home safely. Four months can seem like an eternity when a LO is in a war zone. This should make your family Christmas even more appreciated.
I've been already looking forward to a 2014 family Christmas at home (yes, I'm greedy since we were all in japan together last year). Unfortunately, Conor has already gotten a heads up that he may be kept on in Japan until January 2015. I didn't realize that they did that when 3 yr. overseas stints were up, but the Navy seems to be on a time frame of its own. I told him that I would get an artificial tree and we'd have Christmas in February if we have to. I hope Mitch and your DIL don't have similar delays.
Congratulations to Mitch on making mission commander! I know Conor was MC on a joint exercise, but it was definitely a temporary thing. My understanding is that the MC heads the whole team communicating between the ships and pilots. So, it is a really key role because the MC is responsible for coordinating the data, NFOs, etc. Again, kudos to your son.
Hope all the rest of you are well. I'm trying to get some sailors from Great Lakes here for Thanksgiving. We've done it in the past (and those 18-19 year olds are thrilled to be in a home), but somehow the Navy gets more paperwork involved every year. As a three generation Navy family with a former president of the USO of Illinois, it is driving me nuts. I don't think we are a security threat! Whew, just have to take a deep breath and keep those young kids in mind.
Alice, it is just very hard when they are out for such a long time. Add in the times differences and even in port it makes it difficult to talk to them. Add in their crazy schedules and it's even worse. I finally got an email minutes ago and feel like it is Christmas. Anything helps.
My coping is to just send lots of packages so my DS knows I'm thinking of him. Thank heaven for those flat rate military boxes! We send the craziest stuff - he just got our Halloween box which even had fake teeth for all his flight crew. I can only imagine what they must think of me!
Hang in there, and write whenever you need to.
Hi, ladies.
I agree that we need to get more active; I've been pretty bad about writing, even though I read the comments on my phone.
Kris P.: It must have been great to spend time with the grandsons. It won't be much longer until #1 gets back from Afghanistan. I'm glad for all of you that the RAF deployments are shorter than ours, but any time over there is nerve wracking. Have a great trip to see your two teachers. Christmas will be wonderful.
My DS will still be in Japan, so I am already looking forward to 2014. Even though we got to go over there last year, Christmas in Kyoto was still not the same. Still, I was blessed to be with him at all.
Not too much news coming out of the GW. It seems like they have managed to hit every typhoon in the east Pacific this cruise. I know their escorts have it worse because the destroyers are so much smaller, but even a carrier has to be bouncing around like a fishing bobber with 30 ft. waves! I don't even like to think about our LOs landing in that kind of weather.
Alice, where is your DS out of? I didn't know any of the cruises were that long. My DS's former roommate had a new daughter in April and had to leave in May. I feel sad when I think she'll be practically crawling by the time they get back in port. I wouldn't have survived my three if I had to do it on my own. One great thing about that Navy is that your DIL has a built-in family and they all know exactly what it is like. feel free to vent any time. That's what we are here for.
Congrats - my son is P-3's and loves it!
Hello NFO Moms! While I have enjoyed NavyforMoms.com for a few years now, this is my first venture into this group's forum. My DS is entering Advanced training in Pensacola. Just finished Intermediate last week and was selected for jets, so he is a happy camper! As you all can relate, if our loved ones are happy... we Moms are happy. :- --Rose
