I'm PCS-ing to norfolk early 2012 and am wondering what kind of experiences everyone has had with housing?  I live off base (even base housing is off-base technically) at Great Lakes right now.  I love it, but we want to do on base housing at least once.  Any advice?

I live in base housing in norfolk, No housing is on base except JFSC, and that kinda park of Camp Allen. I like living on base, its just my husband and I in a 3 br 2.5 bath. The commute is easy and we are close to everthing in my opionion. Norfolk is different in that "Base Hosing" isn't jsut in norfolk its in little creek, virginia beach, protsmouth, cheasapeake and yorktown. It depends where you want ot live and you family size eligibility on where you go. We chose norfolk because we wanted to be close to base. a lot of people choose elsewhere on the "ghetto" persona that norfolk gets. I would not live in a place i feel unsafe so i dont agree with the negative nacy's about norfolk.

okay thank you for the information!

Hey Kac46047...What does JFSC stand for? My boyfriend and I are discussing marriage. I am trying to research best areas (safe areas)  we can live in etc...pretty much research everything I can. Thank you. Also, how is living in Norfolk? jobs? entertrainment? life? lol sorry

JFSC is Joint force staff college. Im not entirely sure who works there, im guessing its a bunch of administrative buildings and military college. It is conntected to Camp allen so theres some Marines there but its a small marine base.  I love living in norfolk there is a lot to do around here, we are close to the downtown and 20 mins away from the beach =]. norfolk is a finicky area in that some is bad and some is good theres not just a "bad area" its kind spotted around. Housing is in a safe area in my opinion, there are no other regular resident housing around except military families (Ben morrell is different that development borders regular norfolk residents and I hear there are break in there, but that housing is for bigger families also) I know a lot of people chose to live outside Norfolk like VA beach, portsmouth or cheasapeak becaue they dont want to live in norfolk. The commute is the killer i know my freinds husband leaves by 5am everyday just to make it to norfolk on time from va beach (its only a 20 min drive without traffic but the mornings are a killer)

Jobs are hard you have to take what you can get, I have a degree and im finding it very hard to get something in this area. another wife just set me up with an interview at her job so we can see how that goes. Good luck!! =]

Thank you so much for your input! I really appreciate it!! (:
