My son has been super-happy at The Myrtles in Olde Towne Portsmouth (the three-story brick buildings, not the high-rise across the street, which used to be called The Heights and is now also called the Myrtles - same mgmt co. - confusing).  Great amenities and location right outside Naval Medical Center Portsmouth.

Does he share a room an what does the price range? I have a son that is a corpsman great kid lost in big old world! E3 West

I just moved back home from Norfolk since my  hubby is going to be gone most of this year.  We lived in Lincoln housing in Castle Acres.  It was a 3 bedroom town house and it was really close to the Norfolk base.  Traffic is another big thing to consider when you're moving to the area.  If your hubby is stationed in Norfolk and you live in Hampton/Newport News, traffic can be awful because of the tunnel!  We had 2 dogs so we didn't really have a lot of choices, but military housing.  Overall, it wasn't too bad and I liked that they had security driving around.  We did have a lot of work order/maintenance issues though.  If you're able to get an apartment, some of the prices aren't too bad, but we found the house rentals to be really high.  Most places charge 1200 or so cause they know how much BAH is and they don't include anything.  I'm pretty sure you can contact Navy housing and ask them about areas too.

I have two grandchildren stationed there, One at Norfolk Base and the other at Oceana Air base,  The one at Oceana has been there for almost 3 years and she chose Virginia Beach to get an apartment and I do not know the name she lives at but my grandson has been there since last Sept. he chose to get closer to the base at Norfolk and got a house at Portsmouth.. His first time they left to come home at Thanksgiving time, someone one must have seen them loading their car etc but when they got back they were cleaned out, all the electronics were gone as well as some of their furniture... they were actually scared to stay there after that and went and stayed with my grand-daughter but then they search for housing a few days and found a very nice apartment and we were there this weekend and it was only 5 miles from the ocean... we had the best time.  Cannot think the name but on Diamond Plum Drive...  can find out for you... But just make sure you get in a safe area.  I contacted a friend of mine that his son is something in City planning or something there at Virginia beach and he said there were three that he would recommend and this complex was one, only two nicer but this one is close to the freeways and interchanges so easy to get to work.  The traffic is very bad getting to and from the bases at regular hours but they do have the reversible lanes to help... hopefully this will help you... But just make sure you are in a safe place... If visiting,we stayed right on the board walk and loved it... right now prices are not very high we got rooms for 3 nights for about $300.  Good luck...

Staying at Renissance at 425 water st very nice at 89.00 a night with son military ID

NCRMOORE, you really do have to be careful anywhere you live.  My grandson was transferred from San Diego to Norfolk back in September and they had contacted a real estate company to help them find a place etc. They were wanting a house... so the person had about 3 houses to show them when they got to Norfolk.. The only trouble was when they got there, they had a big storm hurricane coming in and the city had to be evacuated but they went ahead and rented one of the houses, which looked ok on a main street, inside was nice and they really liked the house, but after the storm was over and their furniture arrived from San Diego, they got set up etc and then realized they were not in a good section of town there.  His wife was really not comfortable staying there while he was underway, but she stayed there, just did not feel safe at all.  She was scared to get out on the street and walk up a block to the store etc.  But they had signed a lease and then for Thanksgiven they came home to Georgia and on Sunday drove back to find out that someone must have seen them leave and went in a window, broke the window to get in and stole everything valuable they had in the house.  So needless to say, they did not spend another night in that house.  They stayed with another one of my grandchildren who is also stationed there for about 4 days while they found something else and got moved.  They moved into Virginia Beach and into an apartment.  I have a friend that his son is like city manager at Virginia beach and was able to get his input on the apartment they got... and they have enjoyed it there, not 100% for I believe if they cook out they have to go out to an special area they have to cook out... maybe not but I know there are lots of rules... But they have been there now since the first of Dec 2011...  So do be careful.  Both my grandchildren actually live in Virginia Beach.. I loved it there when I went up for a visit.  That grandson is assigned to a ship U.S.S. Bainbridge and my grand-daughter is assigned to the USS LaBoom.  But she has been on ground duties for she had a baby last year the end of July and now she remarried in March and just found out she is Pregnant again... so she will not be deployed with her ship in July as scheduled... so now she has been working at one of the hangers at Oceana.  Don't know if they will leave her there or move her.  But she definately will not have to leave with her ship etc.   She has already been deployed while on the James T Williams ship.. she seemed to not mind the deployment, but was scared some of the time but I am glad that they will not make her go with the ship this time...   You just be careful for we live in a mean ole world.

TN, my corpsman son is leaving for overseas next week and his corpsman roommate (great guy) is looking for a replacement!  It's a great apartment at The Myrtles next to Naval Medical Center Portsmouth by the Elizabeth River waterfront, here are the details and photos. My cell # is on the second link top right, please call me if you have any questions; let me know if your son is interested and I'll connect everyone up :)
