If he is assigned to a ship that is yet to be commissioned...then he will be a Plank Owner of that new ship. A Plank Owner is a member of the first/original crew on a ship. This is a very big deal!
Norfolk has it's own military web page with tons of info....Ombudsman info and phone numbers. If he has the name of his ship tell him to look online for info....it should have a "welcome aboard page" with phone numbers to ask questions and get info. Just remember his orders tell him where to be....when he shows up there they will take him under their wing....he BELONGS to the U.S. Navy now....they will make sure he is exactly where he suppose to be. I wish you had told us which ship he was going to....it is a VERY big thing to be the original crew of a new ship~~~~congrats to your son!...Hope this helps just a little....I'm farely new at this too....my son headed to Norfolk and I was scared to death he would "be on the streets"....lol! The Navy was waiting and had everything planned out for him.....but I wished they had shared some of that info...mama's worry ya know! lol!
Hi Carolyn!...Get her to look up the ship she's being assigned to....find the "Welcome Aboard" area....have her fill out the paperwork online for a sponsor. When she gets to the city where she is suppose to be....if she flies she can go to the Airport USO they have other sailors there that will share a ride....by taxi to the base....some bases have shuttles that run between the airport and base...but the hours are limited. So extra money for a taxi may be needed. She will have orders to report to???? area....she simply has to do just that. The Navy will then get her to a room, give her instructions on when and where she must be....and even what to wear!.....The sponsor will take her around the base..and be a ready made friend! My Trav one and 1/2 yrs later still hangs with his sponsor on his days off...evidently "sponsors" are super friendly mates who volunteer to make more friends.SO.....if your beautifull sailor just gets to the one place her orders tell her to getto....everything else will be taken care of....so the only thing she will HAVE to do is call the numbers they give her on her orders for a pick-up....or take a cab or drive to the place they tell her "check-in" from there it's all Navy! Hope this helps some....keep me posted! Let me know if everything went well....Cheryl
