Here's a Discussion group to post our Norfolk members' generous offers of holiday dinner to our sailors, and post our sailors' needs (looking for a "host" family for holiday dinner, activities on or near base base, rides to the airport, etc).

John and Yvonne Wagner posted this on Monday 11/7:
Just in case there are any new sailors in this area that won't be going home for Thanksgiving, Yvonne and I have room at our table for about eight to ten. Most of you know that we open our home to servicemen and women on a regular basis. Most of those who fellowship with us regularly are going home. So I just thought we would let you all know that there isn't any reason for your sons or daughters to be alone during the holidays. But do let us know to help us plan.

Hello there, my daughter just got to Norfolk yesterday and does not know anyone, she is going to be alone for Thanksgiving and I was hoping you might still have some room available? I know it is short notice, and I apologize for that. If you could let me know I would greatly appreciate it. Thank you so much, my email is blesd3x@yahoo.com
God Bless,
Paula Williams
Thanks Marci! I'll be staying in Portsmouth because my son is living on the barge right now. The Renaissance Hotel buffet might be a good option. I'll be staying at the Governor Dinwiddie Hotel. I wonder if they serve a Thanksgiving dinner too? I'll have to call them tomorrow. :)
Does anyone have a sailor on the barge in Portsmouth who doesn't have Thanksgiving plans?
Here's a listing of restaurants in Portsmouth: Portsmouth Dining
From the ferry landing on High Street, you can walk to any restaurant on High St up to street address "800."
By the way, the ferry from Norfolk Waterside makes two stops: one at the High Street dock, and the other at the Renaissance Hotel. It's about a one minute ride between those two stops :-)

My favorite restaurants there are Still, which has phenomenal tapas and a great wine list, and The Deck, which is in the marina just a few steps north of the Renaissance and has an incredible view of the Norfolk waterfront and skyline.
From Kim of Virginia on 11/19: I live in VA and my husband and I would welcome your son or daughter for the holidays. Just let me know and we can make it happen. Our son is stationed in Tampa and is with is wife and family so we feel no child should be alone or stuck in a strange state without family on the holidays.
From CindyD on 11/19: Does anyone know a family that might take in my son for Thanksgiving? He just got back from his first deployment and last Thanksgiving he was on duty all day and the year before that he was in boot camp.
Cindy,
Yvonne and I would love to invite your son for Thanksgiving. If you PM me I'll be glad to give you our contact information.
